Barcelona's Aging Vehicle Fleet Sparks Calls for Renewed Support

The Partido Popular demands financial assistance from the city government to address the increasing age of vehicles on Barcelona's roads.
Daniel Sirera, president of the Partido Popular (PP) group at the Barcelona City Council, has criticized the administration of Mayor Jaume Collboni for what he describes as a lack of action regarding the aging vehicle fleet in the city.

Recent data released by the city administration indicates that the average age of vehicles in Barcelona has now surpassed 12 years.

Sirera pointed out that this situation results in higher pollution levels, reduced road safety, and the growing obsolescence of private vehicles in the Catalan capital.

In his statements, Sirera highlighted initiatives in other major cities, such as Madrid’s Plan Cambia 360, which provides up to €5,500 for individuals who replace their old vehicles with zero-emission alternatives.

He criticized Collboni for what he perceives as a preference for making announcements and holding press conferences rather than implementing practical measures to help families transition away from polluting vehicles.

According to a municipal report published on June 7, a significant portion of vehicles in Barcelona is over a decade old, with 47% of cars and 49.7% of motorcycles and mopeds exceeding this age threshold.

The automotive sector has voiced concerns that without substantial economic incentives, the renewal of the vehicle fleet will stagnate, jeopardizing both climate goals and road safety standards.

In response, the PP has proposed a municipal assistance plan focused on sustainable mobility, named "Barcelona CERO." This initiative aims to offer direct subsidies of up to €4,000 for the purchase of electric vehicles, which could increase to €5,500 if an old vehicle is scrapped.

The proposed budget for this plan is €15 million annually, which would be financed through municipal funds, coordinated with the government's MOVES III plan and supplemented by support from the Generalitat to amplify the impact of the initiative.

Sirera emphasized the urgent need for the city administration to take proactive measures in addressing the aging vehicle fleet and associated pollution issues, stating that sustainable mobility should not merely be a slogan but a call to action requiring concrete support.
