The Basque government has announced an initiative that will allow hospitalized individuals to receive visits from their pets, a measure that is currently being tested in Vitoria and is expected to be progressively implemented across the three provinces of the Basque Country.

The pilot program will inform the specifics of the policy as it continues to develop.

Visits from pets will be permitted in open and common areas of the hospital, as well as in patient rooms when medically appropriate.

In shared rooms, consent from other occupants will be required for any pet visits.

A protocol outlining the necessary requirements for pets has been established, and dogs of all types will primarily be allowed.

This initiative is particularly aimed at patients who are hospitalized for extended periods.

During the visits, animals will be under the supervision of hospital staff to ensure safety and compliance with health regulations.

Susana López Altuna, the director general of Osakidetza, the Basque health service, highlighted the intent behind the initiative, stating that hospitals can often feel like hostile environments.

She emphasized that measures such as these aim to humanize the hospital experience for both patients and their families.

Research has shown that interacting with animals can have calming effects, and in older adults or individuals with neurological conditions, the presence of an animal may enhance memory stimulation.

Nonetheless, pet visits will require approval from the attending physician and the head of the unit, ensuring that the health and safety of all patients remain paramount.
