Endesa Restores Full Power Supply Following Total Blackout in La Palma

All electricity services have been restored in La Palma after a total blackout affected over 50,000 users.
Endesa announced late on Tuesday that the electric supply in La Palma has been fully restored following a total blackout that occurred at 5:32 PM local time, leaving all users connected to the island's network without power.

The restoration of service began immediately, enabling recovery in approximately three hours.

The company reported that this swift action was possible due to the urgent mobilization of technical teams and effective coordination with the system operator.

Pablo Casado, territorial director of Endesa in the Canary Islands, stated, "We have dedicated all our efforts to restore service to our customers as quickly as possible.

We are now thoroughly analyzing all records to accurately reconstruct the sequence of events and identify the cause of the incident."

The blackout was attributed to a "turbine generation trip," affecting a total of 50,289 supply connections on the island.

This incident added to the island's ongoing energy issues, which included two blackouts in May and several intermittent outages in various areas.

Canary Islands emergency services announced on social media that the Insular Executive has activated the Canary Islands Emergency Plan (Plateca) in response to the blackout.

Real-time data from the Red Eléctrica, the electricity network manager in Spain, indicated a drop in energy demand to 1.2 megawatts from the forecasted 29 megawatts, before subsequently falling to zero.

Sergio Rodríguez, president of the Cabildo de La Palma, expressed concern about the island’s energy infrastructure, stating that La Palma continues to resemble “an island that is not in the first world” and called on both central and regional governments to take measures to prevent future outages.

The Cabildo had previously urged the regional government to take action after two blackouts occurred within a week in May. The local authority described the situation as an "energy emergency,” claiming that the current generators are outdated.

Since May, and including the latest incident on Tuesday, La Palma has experienced up to six disruptions to its electrical supply, with causes ranging from technical failures to damage caused by land movement in underground installations.

A major blackout also affected the Iberian Peninsula on April 28, with investigations ongoing to determine the causes, although cyberattack scenarios have been ruled out.

The last total blackout on La Palma occurred in March 2018. The Canary Islands have a history of both partial and total blackouts, with incidents recorded on several islands between 2019 and 2020. Additionally, La Gomera experienced a complete power outage in July 2023 due to a fire in the El Palmar thermal power plant.

In November 2024, the Government of the Canary Islands was required to refund €50 million to electricity companies for sanctions imposed due to these energy outages, attributable to the expiration of regulatory processing times.

Canary Islands operates not on a single electrical system, but rather on six isolated systems, with only Lanzarote and Fuerteventura being interconnected, which means that during a blackout, assistance from other islands is not possible.
