Feijóo Criticizes Government's Budget Extension Plans, Calls for Accountability

Feijóo Criticizes Government's Budget Extension Plans, Calls for Accountability

The leader of the People’s Party demands President Sánchez submit to parliamentary oversight or seek elections during the closing remarks of the party's interparliamentary meeting in Seville.
Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the president of Spain's Popular Party (PP), has expressed strong criticism towards the government for contemplating the extension of existing budgets, urging Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to either submit to the Cortes or call for new elections.

During the closing session of the PP's interparliamentary meeting in Seville, which gathered around 750 party lawmakers, Feijóo emphasized that presenting the national budget is a constitutional obligation rather than a discretionary act.

He stated, 'Their decline cannot also be the decline of our democracy.

They must show what they intend to do with Spanish taxpayers' money and allow it to be voted on.'

Feijóo also took issue with Sánchez's reluctance to put to a vote a defense plan crucial for Spain, sarcastically remarking on the government's approach to military spending following increased pressure from the European Union to enhance security in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Additionally, he accused Sánchez of displaying 'despotism' by allegedly neglecting parliamentary responsibilities, failing to uphold votes that have been approved, and obstructing legislation.

'It is all about Sánchez, but without the people,' he remarked, reaffirming his commitment to expose what he described as 'every democratic violation' by a government that he claims lacks a national strategy or vision for the future.

Moreover, Feijóo criticized Sánchez’s assertions regarding the state of the economy, claiming that an increasing number of Spaniards are struggling to make ends meet.

He contested the government's narrative that the economy is 'skyrocketing,' stating that the only aspect experiencing rapid growth is tax revenue.

'We are suffocated by taxes,' he commented, further dismissing the allocation of funds for ministers and municipal initiatives that do not serve the needs of the most vulnerable, such as those relying on dependency care or suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

During his address, Feijóo was joined by key members of the PP leadership and the President of the Andalusian Government, Juanma Moreno.

He reiterated his vow to persist in his efforts until Spain has a trustworthy government, marking three years since his election as the leader of the PP. Amidst chants of 'Feijóo to Moncloa,' he positioned his party as the primary political opponent in the current landscape.

He urged party members to maintain their momentum, asserting that the government appears 'broken' and fearful even of its own coalition partners.

'If they do not want democracy, they face three challenges: in the parliaments, in the streets, and at the polls,' he concluded.
