Feijóo Launches Campaign for PP Leadership, Criticizes Sánchez Government

Feijóo Launches Campaign for PP Leadership, Criticizes Sánchez Government

Alberto Núñez Feijóo positions himself as the alternative to the ruling party, expressing the need for change in Spain.
Alberto Núñez Feijóo has officially launched his campaign for re-election as leader of the Popular Party (PP) in Valladolid, calling on party members to unite and build a pathway forward as the principal alternative to the government led by Pedro Sánchez.

During his first campaign event, Feijóo characterized Sánchez’s government as 'rotten' due to corruption allegations, stating, 'I do not want to govern over the ashes of the PSOE, but to earn the trust of the Spanish people and demonstrate our capacity to manage.'

Feijóo is currently the sole candidate for the extraordinary National Congress scheduled for July in Madrid.

He emphasized the necessity of his upcoming tour to present his vision and to express gratitude to the party's membership.

'There are some who believe that the party is surplus to requirements, that regional presidents are just mere figures, and that friendship matters more than performance,' he remarked, alluding to controversial messages involving Sánchez and former minister José Luis Ábalos that criticized dissenting Socialist leaders.

He asserted that this year's congress would be a 'turning point for political change in Spain,' contrasting it with a previous gathering in Seville three years prior aimed at resolving internal party issues.

'In 2022, it was about fixing the PP; in 2025, it is about fixing Spain,' he declared.

Feijóo claimed that the PP has become 'the main party in the country,' citing strong electoral performances across various autonomous communities, boasting a robust presence in 11 communities, as well as Ceuta and Melilla, plus the Vice Presidency in the Canary Islands.

His aim is to present a comprehensive national project that addresses 'the need for a moral rearmament' against what he termed 'absolute degradation' within the current governing structure.

He remarked, 'No matter how long this government lasts, which is already passé, Spain will have an alternative with values.'

As part of his campaign, he will unveil a 'decálogo del cambio' outlining his proposed changes if he ascends to power, which includes plans for a general audit addressing what he referred to as the government’s 'wastefulness.' During his speech, he declared, 'I am more prepared to govern Spain.

And I am more excited to achieve it.

Today, I want us all to take this step forward together.'

Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, the president of the PP of Castilla y León, expressed strong support for Feijóo, commending his bravery in challenging Sánchez.

He urged Feijóo to reach the Moncloa Palace to end what he described as the 'nightmare of Sánchezism' and restore decency in politics.

Throughout his remarks, Feijóo emphasized the critical nature of the moment for Spain, claiming that surrounding conditions in Sánchez’s administration are tainted by 'lies and corruption.' He encouraged all citizens to participate in a demonstration scheduled for June 8, inviting them to attend 'without party labels' while wearing a 'shirt of honesty.' He stated, 'It doesn’t matter who they vote for; those who seek honesty should come to the gathering.

We are with the millions of Spaniards who want to change the government.

This is not about a party's interests; it is about the country's interests.

This is not about labels; it is about decency.' In response to criticism from the Vox party regarding the protest, he asserted that 'the gravity of what this Government does does not warrant a debate among opposition parties.'
