The partnership will supply 25 MW of wind power to aid Air Liquide's sustainability goals in Spain and Portugal.
Air Liquide has entered into a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Iberdrola for the supply of 25 megawatts (MW) from wind energy projects located in northern Spain.
This initiative is aimed at electrifying the operations of the French industrial group in both Spain and Portugal.
The renewable energy will be sourced from three wind generation assets situated in the regions of Castilla y León and Asturias.
Both companies have underscored that this partnership stems from a strong collaboration between Iberdrola and Air Liquide, enabling the French giant to further develop sustainable and innovative solutions for the supply of industrial gases.
Furthermore, the agreement will allow Air Liquide's customers to meet their carbon footprint reduction targets associated with their final products.
Sergio Hernández de Deza, Iberdrola's Director of Large Clients and PPAs, emphasized that both companies share a commitment to creating a cleaner and more competitive future.
He noted, "Companies have an increasingly important role in ensuring that the energy transition and the electrification of the industrial sector continue to progress.
Agreements like this are fundamental to support the new renewable energy capacity being built."
Dolores Paredes, the General Director of Air Liquide in Spain and Portugal, stated that the signing of this strategic agreement marks a significant milestone in achieving the sustainability goals outlined in the company’s strategic program, Advance.
This deal is part of the PPAs secured by Air Liquide in 2024, representing over 2,500 gigawatt hours (GWh) of low-carbon electricity, enabling the company to reduce its CO2 emissions by more than 1.2 million tons per year.
Iberdrola's extensive experience in PPAs includes managing energy purchase agreements across various countries, including Spain, Portugal, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, the United States, Brazil, Mexico, and Australia, encompassing both onshore and offshore wind projects as well as photovoltaic systems.
For the second consecutive year, Iberdrola has been a leader in the European PPA market, as reported in the Pexapark Renewables Market Outlook 2025, with 1,251 MW contracted in 2024, representing a 38% increase compared to 2023.
Iberdrola has announced 15 agreements in Europe with large companies, including Amazon, for both wind and photovoltaic projects in Spain, Portugal, and the United Kingdom, related to the East Anglia Three offshore wind farm.
It has also partnered with Italian firms such as BTicino, Acciaierie Venete, Prima Sole Components, and Bayer for a total of approximately 50 MW.
Iberdrola, Europe's largest utility by market capitalization, has also strengthened alliances with major corporations like Microsoft, Meta, Salzgitter,
Mercedes-Benz, and Vodafone, establishing PPAs as a crucial tool for industrial electrification by ensuring a stable and fixed price for renewable energy over the long term.
