Internal Dissent Grows in Spanish Socialist Party Amid Scandal

Prominent figures call for early elections as internal criticism intensifies following leaked audio allegations.
The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) is facing mounting internal pressure as criticisms escalate following the leaking of audio recordings involving party figures.

The scandal, often referred to as the 'cloacas' of the PSOE, has emerged at a particularly vulnerable time for Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, with influential party members now voicing their concerns publicly and privately.

Emiliano García-Page, the president of the Castilla-La Mancha regional government, was among the first to suggest the possibility of early elections.

He expressed grave concerns over the current trajectory of Sánchez’s leadership, stating that the ongoing situation could adversely affect regional administrations in the upcoming 2027 elections.

During an interview on Radio Nacional de España (RNE), García-Page hinted at taking steps toward advocating for an electoral advance, although he acknowledged that only the Prime Minister holds the authority to call elections.

Former Aragón president Javier Lambán echoed similar sentiments shortly thereafter, stating on social media, "If I were President Sánchez, I would end this agony." Lambán, who led Aragón for eight years and has been critical of Sánchez's alliances with separatist parties, expressed that the narratives meant to contain the scandal, whether founded or not, are crumbling in the eyes of the public.

He further claimed that governing under the current circumstances with Sánchez's partners is becoming increasingly untenable.

Vice President Yolanda Díaz has also escalated her criticisms of Sánchez and the PSOE.

Following the audio scandal's revelations, she described the content of the recordings as 'extremely serious' and called for a robust response alongside accountability measures.

Díaz highlighted that the allegations, if verified, pose grave implications for the state of democracy in Spain and urged for a careful investigation into the matter.

Early reactions from other PSOE figures have varied, with some preferring to remain reticent on the specifics, such as the spokesperson for Sumar, Ernest Urtasun, and Congress representative Verónica Martínez Barbero, who have refrained from commenting on private conversation leaks.
