Madrid Prohibits Neonazi Demonstration Outside Minors' Centre

The regional government bans a planned rally by the extremist group Núcleo Nacional, citing the protection of vulnerable migrant minors.
The Madrid regional government has officially prohibited a demonstration scheduled for next week by the neonazi group Núcleo Nacional, which was to take place outside a centre for unaccompanied migrant minors in the city.

The decision was made to ensure the 'protection of public safety and the fundamental rights of the minors' residing at the facility.

The government stated that the priority is safeguarding the resident minors against potential harassment and hatred from extremist elements.

The planned demonstration was reportedly based on xenophobic and exclusionary messages targeted at the minors in the centre, who include unaccompanied foreign children, referred to derogatorily as 'menas' by the instigators.

The government's statement highlighted that documentation collected regarding the demonstration indicated a risk of 'public disorder' and the potential for inciting a hate crime.

Past incidents involving Núcleo Nacional, along with their frequently used threatening and racist rhetoric, were cited as factors contributing to this assessment.

Francisco Martín, the government delegate in Madrid, communicated the decision on social media, asserting a firm stance against hatred and violence.

The statement stressed that the exercise of the right to assemble does not protect gatherings that result in harassment or discriminatory targeting of vulnerable groups, and that such gatherings can be prohibited if there are reasonable grounds for believing they could constitute a crime or disrupt public order, potentially endangering individuals or property.

The protection of children's rights and the prevention of all forms of violence are emphasized as high priorities for public authorities.

Núcleo Nacional, which was founded approximately a year ago, is currently under investigation for hate-related crimes linked to the distribution of a video containing xenophobic content.

In the video promoting the now-banned rally, a masked individual donned in Núcleo Nacional apparel claimed that society finds itself 'between a stale, pacifist, and constitutional right and an anti-national, traitorous left.' This individual encouraged supporters to join the demonstration, asserting that 'it's time for the nationalism in this country to rise from the couch, turn off the television, and move beyond social media likes to fight for the homeland that belongs to them and to their people.' The speaker also echoed sentiments that were previously used by the group during a crisis, intending to challenge state institutions over their perceived inaction.

Supporters in the video were seen wearing masks and sunglasses to avoid identification, while holding a banner that read 'Neither menas nor halal Núcleo Nacional.'
