Minor Detained in Badajoz Attempts Assault on Social Worker Amid Ongoing Security Concerns

A minor previously implicated in the death of a social educator in Badajoz attempted to assault another worker, prompting calls for improved safety measures in care facilities.
A 15-year-old boy detained in connection with the alleged murder of a social educator in Badajoz was involved in an attempted assault on another worker at the juvenile center over the weekend.

The incident occurred when the minor attempted to strike a caregiver, an act that was thwarted by security personnel who managed to subdue him.

The boy was admitted to the detention center on March 10 alongside two other individuals, a 14-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl, after they fled from the supervised residence where they were living with the deceased educator's vehicle.

Sources indicate that the 15-year-old was solely responsible for the attempted assault, as the 14-year-old remains calm due to medication he is currently taking.

Following the assault attempt, an investigation has been initiated, and the minor in question has been placed in isolation.

Additionally, the incident has been reported to the juvenile courts and the Public Prosecutor's Office for Minors.

The caregiver involved in the incident did not sustain physical injuries but is reportedly shaken by the experience.

In response to ongoing concerns about safety, over fifty workers from juvenile centers and supervised housing, along with union representatives, gathered in Badajoz to demand enhanced security measures and a reduction in the age of criminal responsibility.

They pointed out that they have been advocating for better safety through demonstrations over the past months, noting an increase in aggressive behavior among minors.

A worker, who preferred to remain anonymous for safety reasons, described the conditions at the facility as increasingly difficult, citing incidents of theft and escapes over the past two weeks, indicating that a tragedy could have befallen anyone.

Union organizations are calling for urgent measures to ensure the safety of workers in juvenile care facilities.

They have requested an emergency meeting of the health and safety committee for social services to address ongoing risks and advocate for a secure working environment.

The USO union reminded that they have had a security guard strike at the Marcelo Nessi center ongoing for over a year, aiming to secure adequate protection against these safety risks.

The Office of the Ombudsman has announced that it will conduct an investigation due to the seriousness of the situation.

Ángel Gabilondo's office stated it would seek information from the Ministry of Health and Social Services of the Government of Extremadura, the authority responsible for such juvenile centers.

Furthermore, the General Council of Social Educators has requested a meeting with the Ombudsman, which is scheduled for the following week.

The agenda will focus on working conditions, existing regional and national legislation regarding social protection, labor rights, and safety, as well as the role of the authorities in these matters.

A significant demonstration is planned for the upcoming Saturday in Badajoz, organized by all regional unions, professional associations involved in caregiving, and civic entities.
