The Popular Party breaks ties with the Government Delegate following controversial statements regarding pandemic management.
The Secretary General of the Popular Party (PP) in Madrid, Alfonso Serrano, has officially announced the party’s decision to sever all official relations with the Government Delegate in the region.
This announcement was communicated through a letter, which specifies that communication with the institution will now be limited to essential technical levels necessary for public safety.
Serrano's response follows a social media message from the Government Delegate that attributed blame to President Díaz Ayuso and her administration for the
COVID-19 crisis in Madrid's nursing homes, a statement described by Serrano as crossing a ‘point of no return’ and ‘the last straw’ in a climate of political indignity.
Immediately following this announcement, José Luis Martínez Almeida, the Mayor of Madrid, confirmed he would also sever relations with the Socialist Party spokesperson, Reyes Maroto, and indicated that the Community of Madrid intends to file a legal complaint against her for alleging that “7,291 victims or elderly individuals were murdered” during the pandemic in care homes.
Serrano criticized the Government Delegate’s claims about pandemic management, particularly highlighting the use of a false number, which was later acknowledged even by former officials, accusing the Delegate of exhibiting a lack of respect for victims and healthcare professionals.
He emphasized the Spanish Government’s responsibility for the pandemic response, pointing to ignored international warnings and inadequate measures that were taken in the initial phases of the outbreak.
Serrano also articulated that the Community of Madrid's actions had been supported by over 60 judicial rulings that validated their pandemic response.
The conflict intensified as Serrano accused the Socialist Party of exploiting tragedy for political gain, suggesting that past disasters had been similarly politicized.
In a separate statement, the President of the Community of Madrid, Ayuso, also announced intentions to pursue legal action against Reyes Maroto.
She labeled the accusations made by the Socialist Party as grave and harmful to the professionals involved in managing the pandemic response.
While tensions rise, the City Council of Madrid has declared measures to cut off interactions with the Socialist Party, limiting their participation in municipal events and meetings.
Official communication will now be conducted solely through legal channels, significantly altering the dynamics between the parties involved and the municipal governing processes.
