Political Tensions Escalate Over High-Speed Rail Disruption in Spain

Political Tensions Escalate Over High-Speed Rail Disruption in Spain

The PSOE blames possible sabotage after copper theft disrupts train services, prompting political backlash.
The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) has maintained its stance on a potential 'sabotage' following a recent theft of copper that led to a severe disruption of high-speed train services between Madrid and Andalucía, stranding thousands of travelers.

Transport Minister Óscar Puente has suggested that the incident may involve motives beyond mere economic gain.

The Civil Guard has initiated an investigation into the theft, although it has not confirmed whether the incident constitutes an act of sabotage or a planned robbery.

This disruption, coinciding with a recent blackout, has reignited political tensions between the government and opposition parties, particularly concerning the management of infrastructure.

Some PSOE leaders have pointed to 'the rights' as somehow implicated in the incident.

Ramón Alzórriz, the deputy secretary general of the Navarre Socialist Party, insinuated that the theft may be linked to certain political narratives promoted by the People's Party (PP) and Vox.

He stated, "Someone said something and now things are happening...

The right tends to be very disciplined and very powerful, with many resources of all kinds.

Let’s see tomorrow’s headlines and debates in their media.”

Alzórriz’s remarks were further backed by the PSOE Secretary of Organization Santos Cerdán, who specifically referenced former Prime Minister José María Aznar's call for public mobilization against the government, framing it as a concerning influence in the current climate.

Cerdán accused PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo of displaying moral insensitivity and exploiting national issues for political gain.

Earlier, Minister Puente indicated during a radio interview that the stolen cable, valued at approximately 1,000 euros, was taken during a critical period when train services were set to resume after the May bridge holiday.

He suggested that the thief was knowledgeable about the operation, given that the theft occurred in an unmonitored section crucial for rail traffic.

The PP has criticized the current government for what it describes as a 'chaotic railway system’, demanding an audit of the rail network and the immediate accountability of Minister Puente.

The opposition also insists on compensations for the over 10,000 travelers affected by travel disruptions.

The PSOE has accused Feijóo of being a 'political vulture' who seeks to capitalize on national tragedies to revive his political fortunes, branding him as part of a right-wing coalition that exploits crises for electoral benefit.
