PP Intensifies Demands on Sánchez for 2025 Budget Submission

PP Intensifies Demands on Sánchez for 2025 Budget Submission

The Popular Party escalates its pressure on the government, calling for the budget proposal before June amidst allegations of undermining democracy.
The Popular Party (PP) has announced a concerted effort to address what it perceives as a threat to democracy posed by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's administration.

During a parliamentary meeting in Seville, spokesperson Cuca Gamarra labeled Sánchez a 'little dictator' and a 'borderless liar,' accusing him of sidelining parliamentary processes and misleading NATO regarding military spending.

The gathering, which culminated in a session chaired by Alberto Núñez Feijóo, served as a platform for the PP to articulate concerns about the alleged erosion of democratic institutions in Spain.

Miguel Tellado, the parliamentary spokesperson for the PP, detailed accusations that Sánchez's government is systematically attacking the judiciary, compromising the separation of powers, attempting to control public and private media, and politicizing state institutions to benefit the presidency.

Tellado specifically criticized Francina Armengol, accusing her of 'kidnapping' the Congress of Deputies by blocking the processing of 25 legislative proposals—20 of which have already been approved by the Senate—through indefinite extensions on the amendment submission deadlines.

In a significant move, the PP has registered two legislative proposals in both Congress and the Senate demanding that Sánchez present the State Budget Project for 2025 before June 1. The PP expresses confidence that some parties from the investiture bloc will support this initiative, once again placing the government in a minority position.

Tellado underscored the constitutional obligation to present the budget, stating, 'Presenting the budget is not an option; it is a constitutional obligation.'

José Antonio Bermúdez de Castro, a PP deputy and second vice president of Congress, suggested that the party may take the government to the Constitutional Court for failing to adhere to Article 134 of the Constitution, which mandates the submission of the budget at least three months before the expiration of the previous one.

Additionally, the PP has opted to file a constitutional appeal and a conflict of competencies against the government and the Congress leadership over their refusal to vote on amendments from the Senate that proposed a reduction in VAT on basic food items.

Gamarra warned the president of the Constitutional Court, Cándido Conde-Pumpido, that there is no 'island of impunity' for any political figure.

Gamarra’s remarks followed public commitments by Sánchez regarding military spending, which have been revealed by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, indicating that Sánchez has pledged to raise military expenditure to 2% by summer.

The Secretary General’s disclosure contrasts with Sánchez's earlier statements to Congress.

The session also highlighted internal conflicts within Sánchez's cabinet, particularly between Vice President for Finance María Jesús Montero and Vice President for Labor Yolanda Díaz regarding taxation for those receiving the Minimum Interprofessional Salary (SMI).

The PP’s parliamentary gathering included discussions on housing rights, taxation, and employment, and culminated in commitments to reduce bureaucratic red tape, described by the PP as a major barrier to business activity.

The party announced plans to eliminate three regulations for every new one it enacts if returned to office and the establishment of 'accelerator offices' for strategic project facilitation.
