PP Leader Calls for Resignation of Spain's Attorney General Amid Supreme Court Proceedings

Alberto Núñez Feijóo demands the ousting of Attorney General Álvaro García Ortiz, while the government expresses unwavering support citing lack of evidence.
Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of Spain's People's Party (PP), has reiterated his call for the resignation of Attorney General Álvaro García Ortiz following the Supreme Court's proposal to bring charges against him for alleged breach of secrecy over leaked tax information related to Isabel Díaz Ayuso's partner.

The government has responded by offering full support for García Ortiz, asserting that there is no evidence supporting the leak and emphasizing it would be unjust for him to resign based on unproven allegations.

García Ortiz has denied any wrongdoing and stated that he will not step down despite the ongoing judicial decision.

Feijóo asserted, "It is time for the Attorney General and those who provided him with guidance to leave," referencing Supreme Court Judge Ángel Hurtado's statement that García Ortiz and Madrid's Chief Prosecutor, Pilar Rodríguez, disclosed information about Alberto González Amador as per directives from the Government Presidency.

The PP's spokesperson in Congress, Borja Sémper, aligned with Feijóo's demands, insisting that Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez must also take responsibility.

Sémper criticized Sánchez for remaining silent, noting that he has not addressed questions from the press for 40 days.

The ongoing political crisis has led Sémper to claim that the current government is "in collapse," proposing a government led by Feijóo as a moderate alternative.

Ayuso's government has echoed the call for García Ortiz to resign or be dismissed to allow him to defend himself against the accusations in court.

Government sources have reinforced their backing for the Attorney General, emphasizing that there is no basis for his resignation and shifting scrutiny towards the PP. They maintain that García Ortiz is innocent, asserting that he has not leaked any information concerning Ayuso's partner's tax issues.

However, the Supreme Court judge's ruling suggests the Attorney General had provided information to a media outlet upon the directives of the Government Presidency, involving a correspondence where González Amador's lawyer acknowledged two tax offenses.

Félix Bolaños, Minister of the Presidency, Justice, and Relations with the Cortes, has categorically refuted the claims made by the Judge, expressing concern over the seriousness of such allegations lacking any evidentiary support.

He asserted, "We maintain complete trust in the Attorney General and in the Prosecutor's Office as a whole...

The government stands with the prosecutors pursuing wrongdoing, not with self-declared tax evaders."

Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, also voiced support for García Ortiz, emphasizing the necessity of respecting his presumption of innocence and judicial processes.

He highlighted that individuals placed on trial may sometimes be exonerated.

Torres reiterated that accusations must be substantiated with evidence, which, in his view, is currently absent.

He acknowledged the ongoing judicial investigation rather than a final ruling, advocating for the presumption of innocence until the conclusion of the process.

Oscar Puente, Minister of Transport, who is on paternity leave, has also expressed his defense of Garcia Ortiz, criticizing judges for functioning as the "real opposition" and addressing issues created by Feijóo's party.

The coalition partner Sumar labeled the Supreme Court proceedings against García Ortiz as "alarming," suggesting it sends a hazardous message regarding the rule of law, particularly regarding corruption associated with Ayuso's allies.

Sumar's coordinator Lara Hernández contended that prosecution in this context signals a dangerous precedent for combating misinformation about credible institutions.

In contrast, Podemos has attributed the Attorney General's predicament to the PSOE's failure to counteract the so-called "dirty war" initiated by the previous government, alleging that unresolved issues have led to the current political landscape.
