PSOE Addresses Leak of Private Messages Between Sánchez and Ábalos

Spanish Socialist Workers' Party refrains from filing a complaint regarding leaked conversations amid political tensions.
The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) has announced that it does not currently intend to file a complaint over the recent leak of private messages between Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and former minister José Luis Ábalos.

The party does not characterize the incident as an internal leak and attributes it instead to what they describe as 'the frustration of the right.'

Over the weekend and into Monday, several sensitive messages exchanged between Sánchez and Ábalos were published, revealing candid discussions between the Prime Minister and his former deputy in the PSOE.

These conversations include critical remarks from Sánchez towards dissenting party members such as Emiliano García-Page and Javier Lambán, as well as indications of a rekindled relationship with Ábalos following his dismissal as a minister.

Sources within the PSOE indicate that reports suggest these chats are stored on a hard drive held by the Central Operational Unit (UCO) of the Spanish National Police, leading the party to consider this as the most likely origin of the leak.

While it remains a possibility that the leak could have originated from Ábalos himself, this theory appears to carry less weight at present.

The PSOE is currently opting to monitor the internal situation before deciding on any legal action.

The party stated, 'Let’s see what the judiciary does, it has internal mechanisms.

There are internal elements to understand what has occurred here.' They acknowledge uncertainty about whether the messages were stored on Ábalos' personal mobile, confirming instead that the communications are present in judicial records.

In a meeting of the Executive Committee on Monday, PSOE spokesperson Esther Peña noted that the issue received no dedicated time during discussions.

In a subsequent press conference at the party's headquarters in Ferraz, she described the messages as troubling and serious, citing violations of privacy rights, yet affirmed, 'this is not currently our priority.'

Peña emphasized that the judiciary possesses the appropriate tools to address any arising matters but reiterated that the PSOE has no immediate plans for a formal complaint, leaving the door open for potential future action as circumstances evolve.

She remarked that although the leaked communications are problematic, they do not relate to the ongoing investigations that are pertinent to the party.

The spokesperson expressed a lighthearted view on the leaked content, stating, 'My family group chat is more interesting and lively than these leaks,' while positioning the incidents within a broader context of political maneuvering by opposition parties.

The PSOE has sought to frame the leak as part of a strategy by right-leaning parties to undermine the socialist government, alleging a willingness on their part to resort to any measures to reclaim power.

They conveyed a resolute stance, asserting, 'Let them lose all hope; we will not entertain these practices disguised under the philosophy of 'whoever can, let them do it.'
