Redeia President Asserts No Mistakes by Electric Operator Following April Blackout

Beatriz Corredor emphasizes ongoing transparency in investigations regarding the blackout and defends the company's operational integrity.
Beatriz Corredor, president of Redeia, the Spanish electricity operator, stated that the company is cooperating with ongoing investigations into the blackout that occurred on April 28. During an event in Seville, Corredor affirmed that there was 'no failure in the functioning of the electricity transport network or in the measures taken by the system operator.' She clarified that the investigations are being conducted by relevant institutions, including the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, the National Commission of Markets and Competition, as well as judicial authorities and competent authorities concerning electricity transport networks across Europe.

Corredor expressed confidence that once authorities have sufficient data, they will communicate their findings to the public, reiterating Redeia's commitment to full transparency.

She explained that the operator's role currently involves requesting data from other sector agents, such as distributors and generators, which are necessary for regulatory investigations.

Moreover, Corredor stated that as of now, Redeia does not foresee making any provisions in its accounts to address potential claims from those affected by the blackout, asserting that the company did not commit any errors that would necessitate compensation.

She indicated that any claims that have been submitted directly to Redeia would follow appropriate regulatory channels and, as a listed company, the firm will address blackout-related claims according to established norms.

Corredor maintained that Redeia has always complied with pertinent technical and legal standards in operating the system, emphasizing that all analyses conducted by the company confirm rigorous adherence without any technical errors or faults in the transport network devices.

Following the criticism directed at renewable sources in light of the April blackout, Corredor asserted that the incident would not adversely impact industrial investment in Spain.

She highlighted Spain's leadership in renewable energy, noting that over 63% of electricity generated in May originated from renewable sources, aligning with climate change mitigation and economic decarbonization goals.

While underscoring the safety of the Spanish electrical system, Corredor stated that the blackout would ultimately strengthen the system.

She identified the importance of enhancing interconnections between various national electrical systems, arguing that stronger interconnections lead to increased regional power, competitiveness, and more accessible pricing.

Corredor advocated for the reinforcement of the currently 'weak' relationship between the Iberian Peninsula and the broader European electrical system to instill greater confidence among industries in making investments in Spain.

Additionally, she acknowledged the 'remarkable' speed of service restoration following the blackout, although she emphasized the seriousness of each minute without electricity for those affected and for essential services.

She noted that the restoration of an electrical system from a complete shutdown had never been executed with such efficiency before.
