Severe Flooding Across Andalucía and Murcia Leads to Casualties and Evacuations

Severe Flooding Across Andalucía and Murcia Leads to Casualties and Evacuations

Heavy rains result in a woman's death in Sevilla, with rescue efforts ongoing for her missing husband as flood warnings escalate in the region.
Severe and persistent rainfall has impacted the provinces of Andalucía and Murcia since the beginning of March, leading to multiple evacuations and critical flood warnings.

Authorities have reported that around 400 families were evacuated in Málaga due to rising river levels, although subsequent improvements in water conditions allowed for their return.

The Andalusian region is currently monitoring 19 rivers at red alert levels, including 14 in the Guadalquivir basin, prompting helicopter rescues for stranded individuals.

In Sevilla, the city council closed the floodgates of the Guadalquivir River as it implemented the first level of its emergency plan in response to the rising waters.

On Tuesday, the severe weather resulted in the death of a woman in Constantina (Sevilla), whose body was discovered near the location where her vehicle, which she was in with her husband, was last seen.

The search for her husband, who remains missing, continues.

Additionally, authorities are looking for a 70-year-old cyclist who went missing in Añora (Córdoba) on Monday.

The rainfall has caused widespread disruption, including the closure of numerous roads and suspension of classes in several schools across Málaga.

The Sevilla-Cádiz highway reopened late in the day after being closed due to flooding, while three train lines remain suspended.

In the Region of Murcia, intense showers have resulted in an overturned bus carrying Imserso passengers on the A-7 near Cabezo de Torres, injuring at least 16 individuals, some seriously.

Nine individuals were later rescued after being trapped in two vehicles in Águilas.

Emergency services, including eight firefighters from the Sevilla provincial government and various units of the Guardia Civil, have mobilized a search operation for the missing couple from Constantina.

Their vehicle was swept away by a stream while they were returning to their residence after spending the night at a local property.

The search efforts have been extensive, involving several units including Search and Rescue teams.

The Guadalquivir River has reached alarming levels, with readings indicating emergency measures are necessary in Lora del Río, where it surpassed the flood threshold.

Authorities have expressed cautious optimism as flood barriers have been put in place, although they remain vigilant about the potential impacts of high tide anticipated later in the evening.

In other parts of Sevilla, rivers have overflowed due to the rain and water released from dams, notably affecting six rivers, including the Guadaíra and Corbones.

The regional emergency management has closed approximately 20 roads affected by flooding.

In Murcia, where rainfall intensified, the weather warnings escalated from yellow to orange in several municipalities due to heavy precipitation.

The regional government activated its Special Civil Protection Plan in Águilas, managing a high volume of emergency calls due to flooding incidents.

Educational activities have been suspended in multiple municipalities as a precaution.

Amidst heightened alerts, the maximum water level of the Guadalhorce River reached a new historical high early Tuesday morning, surpassing previous records.

In response to these adverse weather conditions, residents in flood-prone areas received evacuation notices.

By the afternoon, improved weather conditions permitted return to homes in several districts.

In Málaga, emergency services continue to monitor the situation closely as rainfall is expected to decrease.

Meanwhile, significant infrastructural damage has occurred, including road blockages that are impacting transportation across the region.

Emergency responders have handled hundreds of incidents related to flood damage and rescues since the onset of the severe weather.
