Spanish Government Engages Parliamentary Partners Amid Political Crisis

The Sánchez administration seeks support following allegations of corruption involving key party members.
The Spanish government has initiated discussions with parliamentary group representatives supporting its position in Congress, aiming to gauge their support amidst a significant political and institutional crisis sparked by the involvement of Santos Cerdán in a corruption scandal linked to José Luis Ábalos and Koldo García.

Contacted over the weekend, these parliamentary leaders were questioned about their stance on potentially navigating out of the current turmoil, as the government continues to express an intention to fulfill its legislative term through to 2027. However, it remains unclear whether concrete proposals—such as a vote of confidence—will be put forth to secure this goal.

Sources indicate that the government is explicitly proposing a series of meetings with these parliamentary partners to publicly showcase support and collaboratively explore solutions to the crisis.

Nonetheless, skepticism pervades among some representatives, who feel that this is not an opportune time to associate closely with the administration, given the ongoing turmoil.

The political landscape has been further complicated by investigations being conducted by the UCO (Central Operational Unit of the Civil Guard) into allegations regarding potential irregular financing of the Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE).

Investigators are looking into possible links between campaign financing and kickbacks from construction firms awarded public works contracts.

Reports suggest that some funds received by Ábalos, Cerdán, and García may have been allocated to cover party expenses.

Cerdán’s role as an intermediary for negotiations with other parties, including Junts and Bildu, adds another layer of complexity to the PSOE’s current challenges.

His situation has led to a climate of uncertainty within the government, as executive members contemplate the implications for key legislative measures such as budgets and confidence votes.

The PSOE leadership has expressed hope that Santos Cerdán will honor his commitment to resign from his deputy position by Monday.

In a resignation letter made public following a meeting with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Cerdán pledged his full cooperation with justice authorities and indicated his intention to appear before Judge Leopoldo Puente on the 25th to address any questions related to his involvement in the case.

The judge has acknowledged Cerdán’s request to participate in the proceedings and inquired through legal representation whether he intends to maintain his decision to resign from his deputy role, which could expedite judicial proceedings against him without requiring approval from Congress.
