Spanish Government Pushes for National Housing Pact Amid Political Tensions

Minister of Housing calls for cooperation with regional governments to address housing crisis ahead of key summit.
Isabel Rodríguez, the Spanish Minister of Housing and Urban Agenda, has urged the Popular Party (PP) to finalize a national agreement on housing, following a proposal by President Pedro Sánchez to regional governments in preparation for the upcoming Conference of Presidents, set to take place on Friday in Barcelona.

Rodríguez emphasized the need for collaboration, stating, "A majority social support exists and I hope the autonomous communities will agree as well." This remark came during an interview on the television program _La hora de la 1_.

The minister directed her call to the regional leaders, many of whom belong to the PP, reiterating that they have been advocating for their competency in housing matters while also needing to take action.

She conveyed a tempered expectation regarding cooperation from the opposition party under Alberto Núñez Feijóo's leadership, mentioning her optimism in discussions with regional governments, particularly in regions facing housing affordability challenges like Andalucía and Madrid.

Rodríguez highlighted that many PP voters have children unable to afford housing or facing exorbitant rental costs, which can consume all their earnings.

The government's proposal includes tripling public housing financing from 2026 to 2030, with a target of reaching €7 billion, distributed between the central state contributing 60% and the autonomous communities covering the remaining 40%.

Another crucial aspect of the government's plan is a commitment to safeguard the public housing stock to prevent it from falling into the hands of private investors or investment funds over the next 15 years.

Rodríguez asserted that this preservation is vital for maintaining essential public assets, aiming to increase the public housing supply to levels comparable to other European Union nations.

She commented, "We can achieve this if we build and safeguard today."

In a separate context, Rodríguez criticized a recent incident involving businessman Víctor de Aldama, who is under investigation in a prominent hydrocarbon case, as he unexpectedly appeared at a press conference held by former socialist Leire Díez.

Rodríguez labeled the occurrence as a "staged absurdity orchestrated by the PP" and called on the party to take responsibility for this event and its implications related to the ongoing 'Cas Kitchen' scandal.

The minister acknowledged that Díez's actions were "reproachable," yet underscored that the PSOE has begun to address the situation.

Rodríguez remarked, "It is noteworthy that the PP seeks to gain from this absurdity, despite its history of leading significant corruption cases under government action, with a main defendant being a former minister, and a former secretary of state already imprisoned."

The political landscape in Spain remains tense as debates surrounding housing policy and past political scandals continue to unfold, impacting both public sentiment and party dynamics.
