Spanish Navy Unveils Submarine S-81 in Spectacular Display in Las Palmas

Thousands Gather in Gran Canaria for Armed Forces Day Featuring the S-81 Isaac Peral
The first day of the Armed Forces Day celebrations took place under the radiant sun on Alcaravaneras beach in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, attracting thousands of citizens.

The event, presided over by King Felipe VI, featured a naval review in which the S-81 Isaac Peral, the most modern submarine in the Spanish Navy, participated for the first time.

The King was accompanied by Defense Minister Margarita Robles, the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, Chief of Defense Staff Teodoro Esteban López Calderón, and the heads of the armed forces, as well as the Director of the National Intelligence Center, Esperanza Casteleiro.

The aircraft carrier Juan Carlos I led the review, followed by a dozen ships and 23 aircraft, with the King overseeing the proceedings from aboard the Tornado.

Following the naval review, the dynamic display kicked off, showcasing military capabilities that have become increasingly popular.

The event began with a jump by five paratroopers from the Air and Space Army's Parachute Acrobatics Patrol, landing on the beach.

They carried a flag commemorating the tenth anniversary of its proclamation, followed by a massive 70-meter long Spanish flag weighing 15 kilograms, eliciting cheers from the audience.

The Military Emergency Unit (UME) made its debut with a demonstration involving dogs, which preceded a complete naval landing exercise.

The Spanish Navy simulated a scenario where terrorists had taken control of the beach, deploying Harrier jets from the Juan Carlos I to conduct reconnaissance.

As spectators observed through binoculars, helicopters from the V and VI squadrons hovered over the landing zone, where three swimmers entered the water to guide the first marines arriving on semi-rigid boats.

The troops landed while covered by helicopter surveillance, engageing in a mock firefight that concluded successfully for the Spanish Navy.

The Army followed with a display involving five VAMTAC and Hanibal vehicles that simulated a security checkpoint, showcasing operational practices for international missions.

The Civil Guard's ocean-going vessel Ro Segura simulated being taken over by a terrorist cell, requiring intervention from the Civil Guard's Air Service helicopters and the Special Intervention Unit demonstrating their operational capabilities.

The event, lasting over two hours in the sun, concluded with the UME returning to the beach with rescue and canine units, successfully locating and stabilizing simulated buried individuals for transport by sea.

The display ended with the Patrouille de France painting the skies over Las Palmas in the colors of the national flag.
