Storm Jana Weakens While Causing Significant Flooding Across Spain

Intense rainfall prompts road closures and emergency evacuations as weather warnings continue.
Storm Jana has lost some intensity in Spain, yet heavy rains, snowfall, and strong winds persisted on Sunday.

As a result of the adverse weather, the General Traffic Directorate (DGT) announced the closure of several secondary roadways, and numerous rivers experienced significant rises, leading to overflows beyond their usual banks.

As the day progressed, the adverse weather conditions have eased.

Of the 11 autonomous communities that began the morning under weather alerts, only seven remained with some form of warning.

Regions including Andalusia, Catalonia, Galicia, Murcia, Valencia, and the Canary Islands are still under yellow alerts for strong wave activity; Ceuta and Andalusia are also under yellow alerts for heavy rains and thunderstorms.

Additionally, snowfall risk has been reported in Granada, as noted by meteorological sources.

The rainfall, along with snowfall and landslides attributed to the heavy precipitation, has hindered traffic on the secondary road network.

By 4 PM on Sunday, the DGT reported that 26 roads were closed to traffic due to flooding across several provinces, including Cádiz, Málaga, Sevilla, Cáceres, Badajoz, Segovia, Soria, Murcia, Madrid, Girona, Castellón, and Valencia.

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) forecasts continued instability for Monday, activating yellow alerts in Andalusia, the Balearic Islands, and Ceuta due to storms and coastal phenomena affecting the Murcian coastline.

The agency also warns of potential heavy rainfall in Catalonia and Aragón, along with thunderstorms in Navarra, Huelva, Cádiz, and Sevilla.

Significant snowfall is expected in northern parts of the peninsula and in Sierra Nevada, alongside intervals of strong winds and very strong gusts in the Balearic Islands, northern mountain ranges, western Galicia, and the peaks of Tenerife.

In the southern region of Castilla y León, the impact of Storm Jana has been notably observed.

On Saturday night, the Civil Guard from Soria and local police coordinated efforts to evacuate approximately 100 people from a restaurant in Monte Valonsadero due to the overflow of the usually small Pedrajas River, which rendered access roads impassable for non-terrain vehicles.

The increased river flows have also been noted in provincial capitals such as Ávila, where the rising levels of the Chico and Adaja rivers have necessitated the cordoning off of areas, including a frequently visited urban park and nearby properties such as the bullring and the municipal football stadium.

Segovia province experienced similar conditions, with areas like El Espinar paying close attention to river flows due to the risk of overflows.

Preventive actions are being implemented to manage potential excess capacity in reservoirs receiving these waters.

Beyond significant precipitation that has soaked the community since early in the week, the storm brought historically strong winds, particularly in the mountainous areas of Salamanca.

The ski resort of La Covatilla recorded the highest wind gust since records began on the Spanish mainland, reaching 239 kilometers per hour on Saturday night.

While rainfall is expected to diminish in the coming hours, melting snow in the peaks may lead to increased water levels in rivers or reservoirs in the following days.

In Catalonia, the Llobregat, Congost, Besòs, and Ter rivers have exceeded alert levels and overflowed; however, no significant damage or injuries have been reported, according to Civil Protection sources.

In Barcelona, seven individuals were evacuated early Sunday morning, and two homes were sealed after an interior wall and a staircase collapsed in a building in the Gràcia neighborhood, likely due to heavy rains.

The Ebro River Basin Authority continues to monitor tributaries in Guadalajara, Navarra, Aragón, and Catalonia due to the ongoing risk of flooding.

Since Storm Jana reached the peninsula on March 5, the emergency services hotline 112 in Andalusia has logged over 660 incidents.

In this region, the Civil Guard successfully rescued two hikers who set out on an excursion in Mulhacén without adequate materials, necessitating assistance in Capileira, in the Granada Alpujarra.
