Canary Islands Under Weather Alert as Coastal Hazards Ignite Safety Concerns

Authorities in the Canary Islands urge caution amid severe maritime conditions, as viral video sparks public debate over safety compliance.
The Canary Islands have been in a state of pre-alert for coastal weather phenomena since last Wednesday.

This condition, maintained and updated by the Government of the Canary Islands as of Monday, is due to turbulent sea conditions and powerful waves battering the archipelago.

Authorities have repeatedly warned residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution, particularly in coastal areas where waves are breaking violently.

However, not everyone is heeding these warnings.

Over the weekend, a video captured by TikTok user @airita87 went viral, showing a group of individuals, including a young child, standing dangerously close to the waves on a rocky area of Lanzarote's coast.

The situation prompted alarm and outrage online due to the apparent disregard for safety warnings about waves exceeding four meters.

In the video, the concerned onlooker can be heard urging the group to move back, exclaiming, “Get out, guys, you must be crazy!” But the call appeared to fall on deaf ears as the group remained perilously close to the powerful surf.

In response to such incidents, the Government of the Canary Islands has reiterated crucial safety measures for dealing with the current coastal phenomena.

These guidelines include avoiding the use of piers or breakwaters, refraining from taking photographs or videos near breaking waves, not driving through coastal roads susceptible to rough waves, and abstaining from fishing, sports, or nautical activities in high-risk areas.

Beachgoers are advised against swimming in unsupervised or red-flagged areas.

A tweet from the official 112 Canary Islands account on January 13 detailed the areas most affected by the alert.

The current pre-alert extends across the territories of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, the western, northern, and northeastern regions of La Palma and El Hierro, the northern coast of La Gomera, and the northern and eastern coasts of Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

With seas remaining rough, the Canary Islands' governmental bodies continue to prioritize public safety by updating their weather advisories and ensuring that residents and tourists alike adhere to the recommended precautions.

It remains essential for all individuals in the region to stay informed and vigilant to navigate these hazardous conditions safely.
