Two Journalists Claim Early Access to Leaked Email in Ayuso's Partner Case

Reporters accessed confidential correspondence days before it reached State Attorney General, shedding light on broader leak investigation
In a startling development in the ongoing investigation into the alleged leak of confidential information involving the partner of Madrid's regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, two journalists have testified that they accessed crucial emails well before these reached the email inbox of Spain's Attorney General, Álvaro García Ortiz.

The revelations were made during a session at the Spanish Supreme Court, where journalists Miguel Ángel Campos of Cadena SER and José Precedo, deputy director of elDiario.es, were called upon to testify regarding their access to an email exchange concerning potential legal charges.

During his testimony, Campos revealed that he had read the email from the attorney of Alberto González Amador—Ayuso’s partner—by the afternoon of March 13th, hours before García Ortiz received it.

The email in question held details about González Amador's potential plea agreement with Spanish prosecutors for his alleged involvement in tax fraud.

According to Campos, he did not publish the email content immediately due to the source's constraints, but was later granted permission after a narrative emerged in the media suggesting that the prosecution had initially offered a deal to González Amador.

This marked a pivotal moment, prompting the journalist to expose the email's contents after gaining source approval.

In a parallel account, Precedo disclosed that he gained access to the same email on March 6th, over a week before it reached García Ortiz.

He outlined how elDiario.es approached the matter methodically, verifying facts over several days before publication.

Only after the media confusion around the advertised plea deal arose did Precedo feel justified in publishing the damning email contents, which clearly showed that it was González Amador who had initially offered to negotiate with the prosecutors.

The email's disclosure is at the heart of a broader investigation into unlawful leaks, complicating the tenure of García Ortiz amidst allegations of secret-sharing from within the State Attorney General's office.

The ongoing inquiry by Spain's Unit of the Central Operative (UCO) of the Guardia Civil has yet to substantiate claims that García Ortiz or individuals from his circle orchestrated the email’s leak, thereby posing a challenge to the prosecution's theory.

These assertive declarations by Campos and Precedo are reshaping the direction of the investigation, emphasizing alternative channels of access to the leaked material.

With the defense floating arguments that countless individuals could have had access to these communications, the extent and the root of the breaches in confidentiality remain topics of intense legal scrutiny.

As this investigation continues to unfold, revealing intricate overlaps between political and journalistic domains, the examination of email disclosures between González Amador's legal representatives and the prosecutors underscores a story that oscillates between media integrity and political maneuvering in Spain’s judicial corridors.

All eyes remain on the Spanish judiciary to chart the future trajectory of this high-stake judicial inquiry, with implications that reach far beyond Madrid’s political arena.
