Donald Trump confirms negotiations to halt hostilities in Ukraine following an extensive conversation with Vladimir Putin.
US President
Donald Trump has announced that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to "immediately" commence ceasefire talks, following a two-hour phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump revealed the outcome of the discussion on his social media platform, stating, "Just completed my two-hour call with President Vladimir Putin of Russia.
I believe it went very well.
Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations toward a ceasefire and, more importantly, an END to the war." The tone of the conversation, according to Trump, was cordial and constructive.
In response, Putin conveyed a willingness to collaborate with Ukraine on drafting a memorandum aimed at establishing a future peace agreement, but did not commit to the unconditional 30-day ceasefire that Trump had sought.
Putin described the call as "very informative and very open," expressing optimism about the potential for future dialogue.
Prior to the call, Trump reportedly engaged with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as well as European leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and the heads of state from France, Germany, Italy, and Finland.
He noted his intention to facilitate the resumption of peace talks and emphasized the Vatican's interest in hosting the negotiations.
This development comes amidst growing international anticipation for a resolution to the ongoing conflict, which has persisted for three years.
Trump's call to action reflects a shift in the United States' approach to the Ukraine crisis, stirring expectations for a potential diplomatic breakthrough.
The global community continues to monitor the situation closely as both parties express tentative steps toward peace.
