Esquerra Republicana Engages with Catalan Government on Tariff Response and Legislative Measures

The Catalan party expresses readiness to support aid for businesses affected by U.S. tariffs and advances on important local legislation.
Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) has indicated its willingness to assist the Catalan government, led by Salvador Illa, in addressing the economic impacts of tariffs imposed by the United States under the Trump administration.

The government plans to mobilize 1.5 billion euros for assistance, loans, and credits aimed at ‘protecting and revitalizing’ Catalan businesses affected by these trade policies.

Isaac Albert, the party's vice-secretary of communication, stated in a press conference that ERC is prepared to ‘accompany in whatever is needed’ to support the economy.

Albert emphasized the urgency of a collective response to the ongoing 'trade war,' labeling it an unjustified attack that alters established economic rules.

He reiterated the need for measures not only at the Catalan level but also from European institutions to safeguard the fabric of the Catalan economy.

ERC advocates that the government implement protective measures for affected businesses and workers.

In addition to discussions on tariffs, ERC is monitoring a meeting between Illa and parliamentary groups to elaborate on various legislative proposals.

The party has expressed preliminary approval of key decrees that are crucial for the Catalan administration's agenda.

ERC's support is evident in their collaboration aimed at advancing three essential decrees concerning housing, public procurement acceleration, and regulations for campgrounds located in flood-prone areas.

The Catalan parliament is expected to validate a housing decree this week, contingent on its processing as a legislative project, which will allow for amendments.

Albert noted that the Socialist Party has committed to adopting a housing proposal originally presented by ERC during Pere Aragonès's government, which seeks to regulate seasonal rentals more stringently.

ERC Secretary General Elisenda Alamany outlined additional measures earlier this month.

Part of the negotiation strategy includes ERC’s facilitation of the public procurement acceleration decree.

Furthermore, the Catalan government is poised to withdraw the controversial campground regulation and replace it with a consensus-driven proposal in an upcoming Consell Executiu meeting.

Ester Capella, ERC's spokesperson in the parliament, warned that all three decrees faced jeopardy if the government did not comply with the party’s stipulations.
