European People's Party Raises Concerns Over Democratic Norms in Spain

EPP considers Spain's current trajectory comparable to Hungary under Viktor Orbán
Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of Spain’s People's Party (PP), revealed in Berlin that the European People's Party (EPP) has pledged to 'take measures' should Spain's government, led by Pedro Sánchez, continue a course perceived as 'undemocratic'.

Feijóo, addressing fellow EPP leaders during a summit, compared Spain’s situation to that of Hungary under Viktor Orbán, citing actions against the judiciary and journalists as violations of EU values such as the separation of powers and freedom of expression.

During his address, Feijóo mentioned the investigation of Spain's Attorney General, Álvaro García Ortiz, over alleged misuse of secrets, and a proposed law by the ruling PSOE that allegedly undermines public prosecution in cases involving female relatives of political figures.

He argued that Sánchez maintains power to manage surrounding controversies, claiming that the prime minister lacks majority support in parliament.

EPP leaders concluded their Berlin summit with a declaration expressing 'deep concern' over democratic developments in Hungary, Slovenia, Slovakia, and Spain.

They urged European institutions to uphold the rule of law and separation of powers across the EU, stressing that democracy is foundational to the Union’s existence.

Additionally, the EPP denounced alleged authoritarian practices, including the situation in Venezuela under Nicolás Maduro, labeling it a 'consummate coup'.

The EPP prioritized housing solutions, and tackling illegal immigration, aligning with Feijóo’s domestic policies.

Notably, they highlighted a surge in illegal immigrant trafficking along the West African route to the Canary Islands, contrasting with a significant decrease across broader EU maritime borders.

To combat these issues, EPP officials advocated for reinforced border protections and measures against trafficking networks, emphasizing cooperation with African nations such as Mauritania and Senegal, potentially deploying Frontex resources.

In response to housing challenges, Feijóo endorsed the 'Declaration of Asturias', committing regional PP leaders to allocate public land for social housing, enhance tax incentives, offer financial guarantees for young people, and address illegal property occupation.

Regarding ongoing tensions in Ukraine, the EPP called for stronger actions against Russia’s hybrid warfare tactics, urging EU members to secure critical infrastructure against potential threats, as evidenced by instances of suspected underwater cable disruptions.

The party voiced support for NATO expansion in the Baltic region and recommended stringent measures against Russia's so-called 'ghost fleet'.
