The leader of the Popular Party emphasizes a collaborative approach to tackle the impact of U.S. tariffs while maintaining accountability.
Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of Spain’s Popular Party (PP), has extended an invitation to the government of Pedro Sánchez to collaborate in responding to the trade tensions initiated by U.S. President
Donald Trump.
With tariffs set to take effect imminently, Feijóo characterized the situation as a 'matter of state' and expressed the PP's readiness to support necessary measures, while asserting that this should not translate into granting 'blank checks' to the government.
Speaking from the party's headquarters in Madrid, Feijóo stated, 'It is our duty to articulate a national strategy.
There will be no adequate response to the trade war without unity.' Following discussions with regional PP leaders and sectors affected by the U.S. tariffs, he reiterated the importance of treating this crisis as a national priority, advocating for an approach that prioritizes the interests of the Spanish populace over partisan politics.
He commented on past experiences where significant crises were exploited for political gain, urging that such a pattern should not be repeated.
Feijóo emphasized the need for enduring structural responses to the emerging 'new paradigm' in international trade, rather than temporary solutions.
The PP has formulated a list of ten proposals, with four aimed at the European Union and six for national implementation.
These proposals include maintaining transatlantic ties, presenting a unified European front, and ensuring transparency in the distribution of aid.
The leader of the PP also underscored the necessity of involving autonomous communities in tackling the crisis, urging the government to convene all relevant stakeholders for discussions.
While acknowledging that the government's immediate response contains some positive elements, Feijóo described the current state of response as 'embryonic' and highlighted areas for improvement.
He expressed gratitude for receiving a draft Royal Decree from the government late at night prior to a council of ministers meeting, indicating that they recognize the potential severity of the situation.
However, he called for complete transparency on the allocation of 14.1 billion euros outlined in the government’s plan, noting that nearly 6 billion euros are earmarked for avoiding specific developments.
Feijóo has planned to present further recommendations to enhance the government’s approach, questioning the current scope of measures across various ministries, including Finance, Agriculture, Labor, and Industry.
He asserted that responses to the crisis should be comprehensive and not solely financial.
The PP reiterated its position that the government cannot continue without a clear plan and roadmap to address the predicament.
According to Feijóo, a coherent industrial competitiveness strategy, a review of fiscal policy, and the establishment of budgets are essential.
He concluded his statements by reiterating that cooperation is fundamental, expressing the PP's commitment to serve the nation and contribute positively to overcoming the challenges posed by the tariffs.
