Irene Montero Launches Campaign for Left-Wing Coalition Ahead of General Elections in Spain

The Podemos leader calls for a united left to address pressing national issues as tensions rise within the political landscape.
As Podemos approaches its V Asamblea Ciudadana, the party has unexpectedly announced Irene Montero as a candidate to lead a leftist coalition for the upcoming general elections in Spain.

Montero, a current member of the European Parliament and former Minister of Equality, was encouraged by Ione Belarra, the party's Secretary General, to spearhead a broad-based list that extends beyond Podemos alone, reaching out to organized civil society and those disillusioned with the current government.

Belarra emphasized the importance of a strong female leader to revitalize Spain's left, asserting that Montero embodies the necessary courage and patriotism for the task ahead.

In her speech, Montero framed her candidacy within the context of international conflicts, referencing the wars in Ukraine and Palestine and expressing concerns over the rising militarization in European politics.

She asserted that the defense of peace is paramount, emphasizing the need for a robust left in Spain to confront the pressing challenges facing the nation.

Montero maintained that the current government, led by the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) and its coalition partner, Sumar, has allowed right-wing influences to prevail despite not holding power directly.

Podemos has been grappling with internal and external pressures since breaking ties with Sumar in December 2023, shortly after the general elections in July, where they secured only five of the 31 available seats.

Montero was notably absent from the initial candidate list following a controversial period surrounding the implementation of the 'Only Yes is Yes' law.

The division between Podemos and Sumar has intensified, particularly following the latter's resolution endorsing alliances on the left, which Podemos leadership has publicly criticized.

During a recent event themed 'For Peace and Against the War Regime,' Montero highlighted growing discontent regarding the government's planned €2 billion military budget.

Belarra urged citizens to take to the streets to oppose the war, invoking the anti-war sentiments of two decades prior and denouncing the European Commission's increase in military expenditure as misguided.

Members of Podemos, alongside various activists, articulated their commitment to a platform opposing militarization and advocating for the rights of marginalized groups, including the Palestinian people.

Former military chief Julio Rodríguez criticized the EU's military focus, characterizing it as a failure of political diplomacy and asserting a growing anti-militarist sentiment within the military ranks.

As Podemos navigates these complex dynamics, it remains committed to distinct political strategies that contrast sharply with those of Sumar, highlighting an increasingly fragmented left in Spain just months before essential elections.
