Political Tensions in the Spanish Senate as Yolanda Díaz Challenges PP's Criticism on Andalusian Issues

Yolanda Díaz and Carmen Belén López clash over government support for Andalusia amidst rising electoral tensions ahead of the 2026 regional elections.
On Tuesday, Yolanda Díaz, the Second Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Labor and Social Economy, confronted the Popular Party (PP) in the Senate, dismissing their criticisms regarding assistance to the people of Andalusia.

This exchange unfolded during the Senate's government oversight session, where PP Senator Carmen Belén López Zapata challenged Díaz, claiming the Vice President disrespected the Andalusians with her comments and management.

López accused the Sánchez government of disrespecting Andalusia and questioned whether the current administration would continue to mistreat the region.

In response, Díaz defended the government's commitment to Andalusia, citing improvements in the region's position compared to when the PP was in power.

According to Díaz, the current government's dedication is contributing positively to Andalucía's progress.

The PP Senator retorted that any advancements in Andalusia were due to the policies of Juanma Moreno, the president of the Junta and leader of PP-A, urging Díaz to refrain from taking credit for others' achievements and advocating for political humility.

López further criticized the PSOE and Sumar coalition, alleging that their policies encouraged inequality and territorial division within Spain, creating a situation where Spaniards are treated differently based on their region.

She expressed discontent regarding the distribution of government funds, asserting that Andalusia is receiving unfavorable treatment.

The senator specifically highlighted various grievances, including the lack of transportation subsidies for young people in Andalusia and concerns over security implications related to drug trafficking in Almería. López claimed that the judicial resources allocated to Andalusia were significantly lower compared to those sent to Catalonia, further exacerbating regional disparities.

In her address, López also took aim at María Jesús Montero, the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, criticizing her for alleged infra-financing of Andalusia, particularly in areas like dependency care.

In her defense, Yolanda Díaz noted significant employment support initiatives launched by the government, including the implementation of ERTE (temporary employment regulation files), which have reportedly safeguarded over half a million jobs in the region.

She criticized the PP's opposition to these measures, as well as their stance on the increase in the Minimum Interprofessional Salary (SMI) and labor reforms that have purportedly created millions of jobs across Spain.

Díaz emphasized that unemployment has fallen significantly in Andalusia since the peak under PP governance, asserting a decrease from 34% to 15.8%.

She reiterated that her administration would not accept any lessons from the PP regarding support for Andalusians, reaffirming her position on the government's commitment to the region.
