PP and Vox Return to the Streets to Demand Immediate Elections in Spain

Political parties rally in response to perceived governmental legitimacy crisis.
The Partido Popular (PP), Spain's leading opposition party, announced its participation in a demonstration scheduled for May 10 in Madrid.

The event is organized by over one hundred civic associations under the 'Platform for Constitutional Spain', and aims to demand immediate general elections and the resignation of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

At a press conference, the national spokesperson for the PP, Borja Smper, characterized the call for elections as a 'just' demand.

He reiterated the party's stance that the government has provided ample reasons for widespread public dissent.

Smper noted that the PP has previously participated in both self-initiated and civil society-supported protests, such as opposition to the amnesty law applicable to officials involved in the 2017 illegal referendum in Catalonia.

The upcoming demonstration, themed 'For the Dignity of Spain: Sánchez Resignation, Elections Now', is set to commence at noon at Plaza de Colón in Madrid.

Among the participating organizations are UNIÓN 78, NEOS, RESISTE ESPAÑA, FORO ESPAÑA CÍVICA, PIE EN PARED, and FORO LIBERTAD y ALTERNATIVA.

Vox, another significant opposition party, endorsed the Madrid protest in April, with General Secretary Ignacio Garriga expressing the party's commitment to any gathering condemning the Socialist Party's corruption.

Garriga emphasized Vox's dedication to supporting mobilizations aimed at repealing legislation they consider detrimental and reiterated the urgent need for general elections.

Vox spokesperson José Antonio Guster also called for 'street opposition' and encouraged citizens to take action against the current government.

Party sources indicated that several Vox leaders would attend the demonstration, though it remains unclear whether Garriga and Santiago Abascal would be present.

Both PP and Vox participated in a similar protest on October 20, organized by the 'Platform for Constitutional Spain'.

The organizers, including prominent figures like Marcos de Quinto and Alejo Vidal-Quadras, criticized the perceived 'unprecedented democratic, political, and institutional deterioration' in Spain and urged citizens to 'democratically take to the streets' as an act of 'democratic resistance'.

They expressed concern that the government projects a false sense of normalcy while a significant segment of the population believes a critical boundary has been crossed.
