PSOE and Por Almagro Initiate No-Confidence Motion Against Popular Party in Almagro

PSOE and Por Almagro Initiate No-Confidence Motion Against Popular Party in Almagro

The local Popular Party claims the motion undermines the democratic will of the people and triggers a political crisis.
The PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party) and the electoral grouping Por Almagro have filed a no-confidence motion in the Almagro City Council aimed at unseating the Popular Party's mayor, Francisco Javier Núñez.

In a release, Marta Rivero, the president of the local Popular Party, defended Núñez's administration and denounced the motion as a disruption of the 'will of the people.' The proposed reconfiguration would bring in a new governing team led by socialist Francisco Ureña with the support of Por Almagro.

The Popular Party's statement criticized the motives behind the censuring effort, suggesting it was orchestrated by 'someone who has been pulling the strings in Almagro for over 20 years' to disrupt legitimate governance by the Popular Party.

The party also alleged that the rapid presentation of the motion indicated premeditated planning by its opponents, suggesting a strategy developed behind the backs of Almagro's residents.

Núñez's administration described its governing period as 'responsible' and expressed dismay that the motion resulted in 'seven councilors benefiting while the town of Almagro loses.' This sentiment was echoed by Sonia González, the secretary-general of the Popular Party in Ciudad Real, who also denounced the motion as an 'opportunistic maneuver' that prioritizes personal and party interests over the common good.

Adding further context, the current mayor previously stripped Genaro Galán, the erstwhile third deputy mayor and Cultural Councilor, of his powers in early April.

This move left the municipal government with a minority position in the City Council following the announcement from the Por Almagro group that they were ending their coalition with the Popular Party, which had been managing the city with five councilors alongside two from Por Almagro.

The PSOE currently holds six council seats in the council.

Rivero reiterated the validity of the Popular Party’s governance and rejected any claims that the motion was founded on a comprehensive project or future proposals.

She called for the electorate to remain vigilant against what she characterized as a political facade designed to manipulate public perception.
