Recent CIS Poll Reflects Shifts in Spanish Political Landscape

Recent CIS Poll Reflects Shifts in Spanish Political Landscape

The latest CIS poll indicates a narrowing gap between the PSOE and PP amid ongoing energy concerns and railway disruptions.
The latest survey conducted by the Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas (CIS) under director José Félix Tezanos shows a notable shift in voter intention in Spain, with the Popular Party (PP) gaining three points compared to the previous month.

The PP, led by Alberto Núñez Feijóo, is reported to have risen from 26.1% to 29.3%, while the Socialist Party (PSOE) continues to hold the lead at 32%.

The CIS poll reflects the political climate following significant disruptions in the national energy supply, as Spain experienced a nationwide blackout on April 28. Despite this event, which has drawn criticism regarding potential failures in governance, the PSOE appears to have only lost a marginal 0.6% in voter support during the polling period between May 5 and 8.

As the government faced scrutiny for the blackout, issues surrounding the railway system also came to the fore.

On May 4, a significant rail disruption occurred, which the PP used to underscore what they termed the "collapse" of the current administration.

Following these events, the distance between the PSOE and PP has decreased to 2.7 points, down from 6.5 points in the previous month.

Vox, a right-wing party, has experienced a decline in support, dropping from the previous month’s figures to 13.7%, a loss attributed to a reduction of one and a half points.

This trend reflects the party’s challenges amid recent legal issues facing some of its leadership.

Additionally, the minor party Podemos has shown signs of slight recovery, now standing at 4.3%.

This resurgence is reportedly linked to their anti-war stance, which contrasts with the PSOE’s recent agreements with Israel.

The newer coalition Sumar appears to have missed capitalizing on this shift, maintaining a vote intention of about 6.1%, only a slight decrease of 0.1%.

The political competition remains close between the two leftist formations, as the gap between Podemos and Sumar has narrowed from 2.2 points to 1.8 points in just over a month.

Among other parties, there is a noticeable vote transfer between EH Bildu and the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), with the latter gaining from a decline in support for the former.

EH Bildu has dropped to 0.8%, while the PNV's support has increased to 1.1%.

In contrast, ERC has seen a slight decrease to 1.6%, while JUNTS, BNG, and UPN have maintained their positions at 1.1%, 1.0%, and 0.1%, respectively.
