Ryanair Clarifies Misunderstandings Regarding Flight Delay Charges

The airline addresses confusion over a supposed new fee for late arrivals at the airport while highlighting its existing policies.
Ryanair has issued clarifications concerning claims of a new fee aimed at passengers arriving late to the airport.

Recently, several media outlets reported that the airline would impose a charge of €100 on travelers who fail to arrive at the airport at least 40 minutes before the boarding gate opens.

Ryanair spokespersons assert that there has been a misunderstanding surrounding its existing policies related to missed flights.

The airline recommends that passengers arrive at the boarding gate at least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time.

Additionally, for those checking in baggage, Ryanair advises arriving at least two hours before the flight's departure.

Despite reports of a new charge, Ryanair maintains that this fee does not formally exist for passengers who adhere to its established arrival guidelines.

Ryanair acknowledges that confusion may stem from an existing fee applied to travelers who miss their flight because they arrive after the boarding gate has closed.

In such cases, a €100 charge allows a passenger to catch the next flight to the same destination, provided they arrive at the airport within one hour of their original flight’s departure.

This transaction must be conducted in person at the ticket sales counter.

The airline emphasizes that the €100 fee is only applicable once the boarding gate is closed and is categorized as an auxiliary service rather than a penalty.

This clarification comes amid recent scrutiny of Ryanair's pricing practices and has sparked discussions within the airline industry, especially in Spain, where low-cost carriers are in ongoing negotiations with the Ministry of Consumer Affairs regarding additional cabin baggage fees that do not qualify as hand luggage.

Ryanair, a leading European airline by passenger traffic, has long been known for its transparency about various additional fees, which are clearly outlined on its website.

Charges apply for a range of services, including selecting seats with extra legroom, front-row seating, and managing special equipment such as baby items or sports gear.

Recently, Ryanair faced a €108 million fine imposed by the Ministry of Consumer for certain commercial practices perceived as misleading.

The airline asserts that the charge for missed flights is not a new policy, occurring concurrently with the scheduled rollout of electronic boarding passes set to go live on November 3. The new system, which aims to eliminate the need for paper tickets, will require the use of the myRyanair mobile app for check-in.

Ryanair claims that nearly 80% of its passengers already utilize digital boarding passes, and the transition to an entirely electronic system is expected to streamline airport processes.

However, there remains concern that those not utilizing the app may incur additional fees.

The airline asserts that the shift will improve seat allocation and provide passengers with real-time updates and documents needed for travel, while also enhancing communication regarding flight status and alternative travel arrangements in case of disruptions.
