Severe Flooding in Jarandilla de la Vera Leads to Rescues and Major Disruptions

Severe Flooding in Jarandilla de la Vera Leads to Rescues and Major Disruptions

Heavy rains cause the overflow of a reservoir, prompting emergency responses and traffic disruptions in the region.
Intense rainfall in northern Cáceres has led to significant flooding in Jarandilla de la Vera, particularly affecting the Charco de la Maricana, which overflowed early on March 17, 2025. The overflow occurred at approximately 5:15 AM, resulting in a surge of water that inundated parts of the town and swept away around thirty vehicles.

Emergency services, including the local police and fire department, responded swiftly to the situation.

Two residents, a couple, were rescued from their home after becoming trapped by the rising waters; fortunately, they did not suffer any injuries, according to the Civil Guard.

The region is currently under a yellow alert due to the ongoing heavy rainfall.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the incident was triggered by the collapse of the drainage system within the reservoir, leading to a direct influx of water into the stream and subsequent overflow.

As a result of the flooding, traffic has been severely impacted.

Authorities have closed the EX-119 road at kilometer 31, implementing detours at kilometer 28 towards CC-246, directing traffic to Losar de la Vera.

The Civil Guard is present along the affected routes, regulating traffic to prevent access to the flooded areas.

Local government officials, including the mayor, Fermín Encabo, reported that approximately thirty vehicles have been affected by the floods.

Concern within the community has been raised, with residents advocating for higher maintenance standards for the water reservoir, which holds a capacity of 310,000 cubic meters and is owned by the Junta de Extremadura.

A local resident, Patricia Nez, relayed her parents' distress after losing their family mechanical workshop due to the floodwaters, acting as their spokesperson in a call for assistance from the regional government.

Nez described the situation as devastating, emphasizing the need for accountability regarding the maintenance of the agricultural reservoir, particularly in light of winter rains.

Nez's family workshop, an establishment of significant importance to them, has suffered substantial losses, and she expressed her frustration at the situation, calling for improved management of such essential infrastructure.

In addition to Jarandilla de la Vera, the Guadalquivir River in Córdoba has approached flood levels, recorded at 2.448 meters at the Casillas monitoring station.

This marks a potential risk for overflow, particularly in residential areas downstream, signaling a need for emergency preparedness measures.

Local authorities have activated a pre-emergency phase, guiding residents in at-risk areas on potential evacuation procedures as precautionary measures are put in place.
