Spain's Attorney General Reaches Out to Telefónica in Quest to Recover Call Records

Álvaro García Ortiz seeks data retrieval amid Supreme Court investigation over alleged breach of confidentiality.
In an unfolding saga that has gripped the Spanish political and legal landscape, Álvaro García Ortiz, Spain's Attorney General, is reportedly taking formidable steps to gather critical evidence to challenge charges before the country's Supreme Court.

Facing allegations of breaching confidentiality with purported leaks of sensitive information involving the partner of Isabel Díaz Ayuso, García Ortiz has personally reached out to telecommunications giant Telefónica to restore the list of calls made from his personal phone, according to confirmations by Spanish daily, El Mundo.

Telefónica, a leading telecommunications provider in Spain, is bound by its customer service policy to grant any client access to their outgoing call records upon request, which can be obtained through its digital platforms or customer service lines.

While Telefónica maintains that no formal request has been made by García Ortiz through its executive channels, internal sources suggest alternative measures might have been pursued by the Attorney General.

The move forms part of his defense strategy amid the heightened scrutiny by Supreme Court magistrate Ángel Hurtado.

The Supreme Court's inquiry follows orders to Telefónica along with Vodafone to provide comprehensive records of all incoming and outgoing traffic from two cellphone lines associated with García Ortiz between March 8 and 14 of the previous year.

This data also encompasses identifying details of callers and recipients.

The investigation zeroes in on alleged exchanges between García Ortiz and provincial Madrid prosecutor Pilar Rodríguez, who is also implicated in the case.

In corroboration with these efforts, magistrate Hurtado has enlisted Spain's Central Operational Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard to amass detailed data packets and communication records, extending even to messenger app data.

The revelations thus far have included assertions that García Ortiz used a dual SIM Samsung Galaxy A54, one registered to his name and another under the Department for the Rationalization and Centralization of Procurement, which falls under the Ministry of Finance.

Suspicions have intensified with findings by UCO indicating a change of García Ortiz’s phone terminal—the same week that judicial proceedings commenced and a week before his office was searched on judicial orders.

In a tangential yet connected narrative, the political landscape in Spain is charged as Pedro Sánchez, the country’s Prime Minister, fortifies a defense against potential radical shifts amid the commemoration of Francisco Franco's death.

Simultaneously, while reinforcing democratic ideals against growing autocratic tendencies globally, Spain readies for comprehensive national events highlighting historical introspection and democratic consolidation.

Lastly, the spectacle of the ongoing investigation touches the corridors of regional power in Madrid.

Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, Chief of Staff to the President of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, and a central figure in associated political controversies, has conceded to spreading portions of a sensitive email post-debate on fiscal compliance penalties and negotiations.

His involvement, characterized by controversial email disclosures, has fed into existing political tensions, emphasizing the separate yet intersecting narratives of privacy, political maneuvering, and organizational ethics staged in Spain’s corridors of power.
