Spain's Economic Resilience: A Positive Outlook for 2024

Spain Poised for Growth Beyond Expectations Amid Global Challenges
Spain's economy demonstrated a robust expansion of 0.8% in the third quarter of 2023, signaling a stronger-than-anticipated trajectory as the country heads into 2024.

According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), this growth builds upon gains from the first half of the year, positioning Spain to exceed last year's growth projections.

Analysis from Funcas’ panel of 19 economic services predicts a 3% GDP growth for 2024, with the Bank of Spain projecting an even more optimistic 3.1%, surpassing the 2.7% growth recorded in 2023.

This consistent upward momentum, marked by quarterly increases of 0.9% and 0.8% earlier this year, defies more cautious expectations outlined just 12 months ago.

However, while the third quarter recorded a year-over-year growth rate of 3.3%, a slight slowdown is anticipated in the year's final quarter due to specific disruptions like the DANA storm.

Consumption dynamics reveal a nuanced picture.

Household consumption grew 3% year-over-year, contributing significantly to the quarter's economic expansion, while public sector consumption saw a notable 5.1% increase.

Conversely, export growth was revised downward to 4.3% from a previously estimated 5.1%, with import growth also decelerating slightly.

Spain's forward economic drive remains primarily fueled by domestic demand, contributing 2.8 percentage points to overall growth, complemented by an external demand contribution of 0.5 points.

Yet, concerns linger over a 1.3% drop in business investment this quarter—a decline due notably to contractions in construction and machinery investments.

From the supply side, all major sectors recorded growth, with industrial value-added increasing by 4.0% and manufacturing specifically seeing a 4.4% rise.

Construction and services sectors similarly posted gains, highlighting Spain's broad-based recovery.

Particularly noteworthy is the productivity upswing of 2.5% year-over-year, offsetting some labor market sluggishness caused by decreased working hours from vacations and medical absences.

As Spain looks towards 2024, the country’s economic health stands reinforced by resilient domestic consumption and an industrious manufacturing sector, painting a cautiously optimistic picture for the coming year amidst a backdrop of wider global economic unpredictabilities.
