Spanish Government Approves Judicial Career Scholarships Worth Up to €12,000 Annually

The new SERÉ scholarships aim to enhance equality in accessing judicial careers over a four-year period.
The Spanish Government has approved a new round of the SERÉ scholarships during the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, aimed at ensuring equal opportunities for those pursuing a career in the judiciary.

According to the Ministry of Justice, these scholarships will offer financial support of up to €12,000 annually per student for a duration of four years.

For the 2025 grant cycle, a total budget of €15.6 million has been allocated, allowing for approximately 1,300 scholarships to be awarded to candidates preparing for the highest levels of the judicial system, including judges, prosecutors, legal administrative officials, and state attorneys.

This funding represents a significant increase compared to the €8 million budget for the same initiative in 2024. The number of scholarships offered has also grown since the first call for applications, where only 245 had been awarded in 2022.

Of the annual €12,000 financial assistance, €8,400 will be allocated as direct economic aid, with the remaining funds designated for preparation programs.

These preparation initiatives will involve mentorship from one or more tutors, along with tailored weekly sessions designed to meet the specific needs of the students.

Furthermore, candidates will have access to a preparation program coordinated by the Center for Legal Studies that involves active judges and prosecutors.

In 2024, a total of 983 scholarships were awarded under the SERÉ program to promote equitable access to judicial careers.

Among the beneficiaries, 790 opted for training to become judges or prosecutors, 162 aimed to enter the ranks of legal administrative officials, and 31 prepared to become state attorneys.

The region of Andalusia had the highest representation, with 26% of the scholarships awarded to students from that area, followed by Valencia, where 13% of scholarships were granted.

Demographically, the majority of beneficiaries (90%) were between the ages of 21 and 33, with women receiving 791 scholarships compared to 192 awarded to men in the most recent cycle.
