Valencia Fine Arts Faculty Unveils Controversial Artwork Depicting Regional President in Prison Attire

A master's student presents a political graffiti piece amid ongoing discussions about freedom of expression in the arts.
The Faculty of Fine Arts at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) is currently hosting an exhibition featuring a provocative textile graffiti that depicts Carlos Mazón, the president of the Generalitat Valenciana, clad in orange prison garb and holding a sign reflecting the number of victims from recent flooding in the region, under the phrase "A presó" (To prison).

This artwork is part of the PAM!25 XIII Exhibition of Artistic and Multimedia Productions, an initiative curated by Laura Silvestre, who also serves as the vice-dean of the faculty.

The exhibition showcases one hundred submissions by 90 students enrolled in the four official master's programs offered at the institution.

Silvestre explained that this cultural project empowers master’s students to present their artistic endeavors, with a jury selecting ten works to be featured.

The PAM! exhibition has been held for 13 years and emphasizes the importance of artistic expression.

Silvestre highlighted that students are encouraged to present mature creations without preselection or filtering, fostering a diverse array of artistic interests and concerns.

She emphasized the fundamental right to creative freedom within a public university context, noting some disappointment that media coverage has primarily focused on sensational aspects rather than the broader significance of the exhibition.

The textile graffiti did not provoke controversy among the jury, which includes prominent figures in the Valencian art scene, such as Blanca de la Torre, director of IVAM, and Pablo González Tornel, director of the Museu de Belles Arts de València.

Silvestre stated that the exhibited works convey various forms of political and social critique, exploring themes of decolonization through diverse mediums including sculpture, painting, video art, and performance.

The artworks are displayed throughout the faculty's transit areas, including hallways, entrances, and elevators, assigned to participants through a lottery.

Though Larok’s piece on Mazón was not among the ten selected works, it has garnered significant attention.

The artist, Adrián Larok, originally from Linares and currently pursuing his master's in artistic production, noted that his work typically addresses social and territorial issues, which he has now advanced to encompass political critique.

Larok emphasized that his piece is not meant to be provocative but rather a form of social critique, asserting that "the artwork speaks for itself." He aimed to transform a transit space into a platform for political expression, advocating for justice.

He employs a technique involving digital collage and stencil artistry to realize his vision.

While he has received unexpected media attention, Larok expressed concern that coverage focuses on his piece at the expense of recognizing the achievements of his fellow students.

As he concluded his remarks amid a supportive audience, his peers responded with applause.
