In an unprecedented incident within Spain's constitutional bodies, the Senate has terminated the employment of two IT workers who allegedly accessed devices belonging to senators and other officials without authorization.

The Senate’s governing body, the Mesa, convened and approved the dismissals on Wednesday.

The Senate has referred the matter to the Prosecutor's Office for an investigation to determine whether this constitutes a potential case of parliamentary espionage, which may constitute a criminal offense.

According to an official statement, the two employees conducted "unauthorized accesses" that were "outside their professional duties" to the devices of Mesa members, senators, and various personnel within the Senate.

This included the "downloading of documents," some of which were of a "personal nature."

The Mesa's decision to dismiss the employees was based on the provisions of the Collective Agreement for Senate Labor Personnel, which classifies such behavior as a "very serious disciplinary infraction" due to deceit, disloyalty, and abuse of trust in entrusted duties.

In addition, sources from the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) stated that the socialist senators have decided to bring the potential espionage to the Prosecutor's Office's attention.

They have highlighted the seriousness of the situation, especially given that several investigative committees are currently active within the upper chamber.

The PSOE has called for a comprehensive investigation into the extent of the alleged mass infiltration and the violation of digital rights of the senators.

They clarify that the unauthorized access to confidential IT material belonging to senators is a grave matter that could interfere with not only the personal rights of parliament members but also the democratic guarantees of their representative work.
