Sumar Assembly Calls for Unity and New Political Alliances

Sumar Assembly Calls for Unity and New Political Alliances

The assembly unanimously approves resolutions advocating for electoral coalitions and social policy reforms.
The assembly of Sumar has unanimously approved six political resolutions that emphasize the organization's commitment to forging political alliances aimed at unity and understanding among all political forces that participated together in the elections of July 23, 2023, and beyond.

This call implicitly targets Podemos, the party that broke away from Yolanda Díaz's formation late last year amid claims that the separation aimed to undermine them.

One of the resolutions passed by the 500 voting delegates at the assembly advocates for a renewed left-wing unity candidacy, urging collaboration among all parties that contested the July elections to achieve electoral agreements for the upcoming electoral cycle.

Sumar proposes seeking 'novel' means of electoral coalitions, recognizing the political autonomy of various parties, and states that conflations should occur at all levels—municipal, regional, and state.

A prominent theme within the assembly was the matter of alliances, with a commitment to continue advancing agreements with parties in a position to collaborate.

The assembly underscores a need for cooperation with both political entities and civil society.

Leaders within Sumar maintain that their goal is to engage widely with an array of political forces to open up the political sphere to broader social majorities and move toward defeating the Popular Party (PP).

This vision of unity extends beyond the general elections scheduled for 2027.

In terms of specific policy proposals, Sumar aims to reduce the standard workweek in Spain to 32 hours, mandate that companies distribute a portion of their profits to workers, establish psychological care as a fundamental component of the healthcare system, and prohibit the speculative buying and selling of homes.

Among their signature initiatives is the proposed 'Universal Inheritance,' which would provide 20,000 euros to youth to foster independence, education, and entrepreneurship.

Additionally, Sumar seeks to democratize corporate structures by proposing legislation that ensures employee representation on company boards and commits to universal child allowances to guarantee care for children.

The assembly also emphasizes the creation of a public care system, integrating responsible caregiving policies, and implementing a 'fair leave' system for child, senior, and dependent care that transcends strict family ties.

The party is advocating for a gradual reduction of university tuition fees, aiming for complete free education within the next decade, and proposes dedicating at least 1% of the GDP to higher education.

On animal protection, Sumar proposes to repeal all laws that protect bullfighting and to recognize veterinary clinics as health centers and work toward zero abandonment of pets.

Changes made in the assembly include expanding the 'LGTBIQ' acronym to 'LGTBIQA+' to incorporate asexual individuals and the establishment of a dedicated Youth Secretariat within the party, alongside a youth quota of 16% in all organizational levels of Sumar.

Lara Hernández and Carlos Martín were elected as the new general coordinators, receiving support from 93% of the assembly delegates.

Both led a list that dominated the new direction of the party.

The political document formulated at the assembly passed with 97.6% of the vote, while the organizational framework was approved with 95.7%.

A new Guarantees Committee was also established, comprising Inmaculada del Pino, Rosana Llamas, Jorge Fernández Nuevo, Rafael Ramírez, and José Valentín Ramírez.

Carlos Martín, an economist and former director of the Economic Office of CCOO, was recruited by Yolanda Díaz for the Madrid electoral list and has previously served on the Economic and Social Council and the European Confederation of Trade Unions' Economic Policy Committee.

Lara Hernández, a philosophy professor and former activist of the 15M movement, has a background in United Left (IU) and resigned in 2015 due to disagreements over alliance strategies with Podemos.
