Three Workers Killed Following Agricultural Building Collapse in Coria del Río

Tragedy strikes as severe weather conditions continue to wreak havoc across southern Spain.
Three individuals died on Friday following the collapse of an agricultural building in Coria del Río, Sevilla, attributed to extreme weather conditions, including high winds and rain.

This incident occurs in the aftermath of storm Laurence, which claimed four lives across various locations in Andalusia just weeks prior.

The collapse occurred at approximately 11:35 AM local time at Cortijo El Sequeiro.

Initial reports suggest that a tornado may have contributed to the building's structural failure, as confirmed by sources from the Andalusian Health Department.

Two of the deceased were brothers, aged 61 and 59, from Dos Hermanas, while the third victim, a 40-year-old man, has yet to be identified regarding his place of residence, according to Francisco Toscano, the subdelegate of the Government in Sevilla.

Emergency services, including firefighters equipped with search dogs, have been deployed to the site to ensure there are no additional victims.

Eyewitnesses reported that only the three deceased were present in the building at the time of the collapse; however, drones may be utilized for further investigation if weather conditions permit.

The agricultural building, according to officials, was actively being used for farming-related tasks when it collapsed, likely due to strong wind gusts.

While Toscano indicated that the cause of the collapse remains under investigation, confirmation from the Meteorological Agency (Aemet) is awaited before fully attributing the incident to a tornado.

The tragic incident has raised alarms among labor unions and government officials.

The Trade Union CCOO highlighted that under current legislation, companies are mandated to adjust work schedules during adverse weather conditions, such as the yellow warning issued by Aemet for wind and rain in Sevilla province on the day of the incident.

CCOO expressed their sorrow and outrage over this "tragic workplace accident" that has pushed the death toll for workers during adverse weather to four within less than a month.

Carmen Tirado, CCOO's Secretary for Occupational Health in Sevilla, reiterated the legal obligations for employers to ensure worker safety in such conditions, emphasizing that the Real Decreto Ley 4/2023 requires employers to adapt or suspend work to protect employee lives.

Yolanda Díaz, the second deputy prime minister and minister of labor, confirmed that the Labor Inspection is currently investigating the events surrounding the Coria del Río collapse, stating that "no one should lose their life at work."

Emergency service 112 had received reports at 11:35 AM on Friday regarding the agricultural building's roof being torn off due to strong winds.

Firefighters from the Provincial Fire Safety and Rescue Service dispatched teams from multiple surrounding parks to assist with rescue and debris removal efforts.

Witness reports indicated that remnants of the building were found over 500 meters away from its original location, with the structure measuring approximately 25 by 20 meters.

In addition to the building collapse, Sevilla province has faced over 70 incidents related to severe weather, particularly affecting the capital and nearby municipalities, where flooding has occurred in various locations, including commercial parking facilities and underpasses in Sevilla and Dos Hermanas.

Notably, flooding has also impacted access routes to Mercasevilla and major thoroughfares.

Furthermore, an inundation disrupted service on the city's only metro line at the Amate station, necessitating alternative transport arrangements for commuters.
