Aragón Challenges National Decree on Migrant Minors Distribution

Aragón Challenges National Decree on Migrant Minors Distribution

The Government of Aragón files an unconstitutionality appeal against a decree facilitating the distribution of unaccompanied migrant minors.
The Government of Aragón has authorized the filing of an unconstitutionality appeal against the royal decree agreed upon by the central government and Junts concerning the distribution of unaccompanied migrant minors.

This decree has yet to be validated by Congress and could have widespread implications for immigration policies in Spain.

The regional government stated that it will adhere to the law, indicating that if their appeals are unsuccessful, they will comply with the distribution mandated by Madrid, emphasizing that they will not be insubordinate.

On the subject, Aragón's President, Jorge Azcón, criticized the decree as 'unilateral' and reached 'without any negotiation', deeming it 'unjust and unequal'.

Azcón claimed that this situation reflects the price Pedro Sánchez's government is willing to pay to remain in power.

During a joint press appearance with Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla, President of the Junta de Andalucía, he noted the lack of communication and transparency from the central government regarding the matter.

Moreno Bonilla echoed these sentiments, highlighting the government's failure to consider the circumstances of the minors involved.

He condemned what he referred to as yet another concession to Carles Puigdemont and criticized the government's treatment of immigrant minors as commodities rather than vulnerable individuals.

Moreno remarked that a fugitive should not dictate policies impacting nearly 50 million people.

In light of a potential legal challenge against the decree, Moreno stated that his administration is currently evaluating its options.

However, he confirmed that they will comply with established laws regardless of whether a constitutional appeal is filed.

The national minister for territorial policy, Ángel Víctor Torres, has countered Azcón's criticisms by asserting that the criteria outlined in the decree are 'homogeneous' for all autonomous communities.

Torres indicated that while some regional leaders recognize the necessity of shared accommodation for unaccompanied migrant children, others cling to messages of inequality, which he associates with Azcón's stance.

Beyond the issue of migration, Moreno’s visit to Aragón resulted in the signing of a collaboration protocol aimed at advancing the mutual goal of developing the rail highway connecting the Port of Algeciras with the logistic park in Plaza, near Madrid.

The agreement seeks to ensure that this critical infrastructure, spanning 1,048 kilometers, becomes operational by 2027, representing a three-year delay from earlier timelines.

A monitoring commission will be established to convene every six months.

Additionally, the protocol aims to promote the advancement of other railway infrastructures, including the Cantabrian-Mediterranean Corridor and the Central Pyrenean Transversal Route.

Azcón emphasized the importance of rail transport for future logistics in Spain, highlighting that Europe mandates that by 2050, 45% of goods must be transported by rail, while currently this figure in Spain is only 4%.
