Spanish Royal Family Takes Legal Action Over Unauthorized Images of Princess Leonor

The Royal Household denounces the unlawful distribution of private photographs taken of Princess Leonor during her military training voyage.
The Spanish Royal Household has announced its intention to file a formal complaint with Chilean authorities regarding the unauthorized dissemination of images featuring Princess Leonor, captured during a private visit to a shopping center in Punta Arenas, Chile.

This unprecedented action follows the leak of photographs that violate existing data protection regulations in both Chile and Spain.

The images, reportedly taken during the latest stop on the training cruise of the Juan Sebastián de Elcano, depict the Princess strolling casually in civilian attire alongside security personnel.

Sources from the Royal Household, who underscored the violation of privacy and data protection laws, confirmed that some security personnel at the shopping center provided access to the footage to a Chilean media outlet, leading to what they deem an “inadmissible” act.

In response, the Royal Household coordinated with the Spanish Embassy in Chile to pursue administrative action against this infringement, which will be spearheaded by the embassy.

This marks the first time the Spanish monarchy has taken legal measures regarding the unauthorized publication of private images since King Felipe VI ascended the throne.

The Royal Household's statement highlighted that “not everything is acceptable” when it comes to privacy laws, which are strictly enforced in both countries.

Princess Leonor arrived in Punta Arenas on March 18, marking the third stage of her military training journey following stops in Montevideo, Uruguay, and Salvador de Bahía, Brazil.

Scheduled to conclude her voyage on July 16 in Marín, Spain, the Princess will return home after a brief layover in New York to continue her military education.

During her stay in Chile, the Princess has been subject to scrutiny from photographers attempting to capture her private moments, although her activities were primarily focused on logistical support and maintenance tasks aboard the training vessel.

The Juan Sebastián de Elcano is currently engaged in a 161-day training expedition that began on January 11. The ship is expected to reach El Callao, Peru in April, before navigating to Panama and crossing the Panama Canal on May 6, with further stops planned in Cartagena de Indias and Santa Marta, Colombia, and Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.

Amidst the backdrop of her rigorous training regime, which mirrors that of her male counterparts—comprising daily drills and up to eight hours of classes—the Princess's experiences are being closely monitored.

She shares her training journey with a cohort of 75 candidates, of whom only eight are women, reflecting the challenging nature of the program.
