Barcelona's Bid to Re-Register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor Rejected by Spanish Authorities

LaLiga and the Spanish Football Federation cite wage cap restrictions as the reason for denying Barcelona’s request to keep playing two key players.
Barcelona’s efforts to re-register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor for the second half of the LaLiga season were denied on Saturday, as Spanish football authorities upheld wage cap regulations.

The decision leaves the club unable to utilize the two players for the remainder of the season, marking a significant setback for the Catalan giants.

Wage Cap Complications
Dani Olmo, a 26-year-old midfielder and key figure in Barcelona’s campaign, and Pau Victor, a 23-year-old forward used mainly as a substitute, were both registered for the first half of the season under temporary provisions.

These registrations were made possible by reallocating wages from players sidelined by long-term injuries.

However, LaLiga and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) rejected Barcelona’s latest request to extend their eligibility, citing the club’s inability to meet salary cap requirements.

In a joint statement, the RFEF and LaLiga explained: 'The Monitoring Committee agrees not to grant the prior approval or the definitive licence requested by FC Barcelona for the players Daniel Olmo Carvajal and Pau Victor Delgado.' Barcelona had previously sought approvals through two separate court cases, both of which ruled against the club.

Legal and Financial Challenges
Barcelona’s financial struggles have been well-documented, with the club navigating significant debt and stringent LaLiga wage cap rules in recent years.

The wage cap regulations are designed to ensure financial stability and prevent clubs from overspending on player salaries.

While exceptions exist for registering players to replace long-term injuries, LaLiga emphasized that these provisions should not be exploited to accommodate players with salaries that exceed permissible limits.

Olmo, signed from RB Leipzig in August on a six-year deal worth approximately fifty-five million euros, was a crucial part of Barcelona’s squad, contributing significantly in the first half of the season.

Pau Victor, signed in July, made limited appearances but was seen as a promising asset for the team’s depth.

Barcelona’s Response and Future Steps
According to Spanish media, Barcelona plans to file a complaint with the Administrative Sports Court (CSD) in a last-ditch effort to reverse the decision.

However, there has been no official comment from the club, and both players’ profiles have already been removed from the LaLiga website.

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick acknowledged the setback during a press conference following the team’s 4-0 Copa del Rey victory over fourth-tier side Barbastro.

'Everyone wants Dani Olmo and Pau Victor back,' Flick said.

'We have to be professional and accept this situation.

The team showed focus and played well despite the challenges.'

Historical Context
This is not the first time Barcelona has faced registration issues due to financial constraints.

In 2021, the club famously parted ways with Lionel Messi, unable to retain the Argentine star despite his desire to stay.

The latest decision serves as another reminder of the financial challenges plaguing one of Europe’s most storied clubs.

Impact on Barcelona’s Campaign
Barcelona currently sits third in LaLiga, five points behind leaders Real Madrid.

The absence of Olmo and Victor adds to the team’s challenges as they aim to stay competitive in the title race and other competitions.

With limited options, Barcelona’s management will need to find creative solutions to address the gaps left by the two players in the squad while adhering to financial regulations.
