Guardia Civil's Historic Cocaine Seizure: A Defining Moment in Andalusian Anti-Narcotics Operations

A record-setting operation on the Guadalquivir River marks a significant strike against organized crime in Spain.
In a landmark operation, the Guardia Civil has seized seven tonnes of cocaine transported via the Guadalquivir River, making it the largest drug haul involving narco-boats in Andalusia.

Distinct from the typically substantial interdictions at the Port of Algeciras, this seizure underscores the regional law enforcement’s heightened vigilance against powerful drug cartels exploiting Spain's waterways.

The cocaine was discreetly concealed in two bunkers on a secluded estate in Coria del Río, near Sevilla.

Here, three members of a criminal network were apprehended, according to a statement released by the Guardia Civil.

This tactical operation, initiated in the early hours of December 27, saw the deployment of aerial, maritime, and terrestrial units tracking suspicious semi-rigid boats at the mouth of the Guadalquivir.

The boats were observed offloading large bundles, subsequently transported to a fortified estate guarded by the armed trio.

Upon raiding the premises, officers uncovered two maritime containers ingeniously modified to store the narcotics without degradation, accessible via top hatches.

The inventory of confiscated items included an assault rifle, an AK47, and two stolen vehicles.

Distinctive branding was evident on the drug packages, showcasing the word 'Guitarra' alongside a demonic visage and horns imprinted on the wrappings.

The operation represents a substantial blow to narcotrafficking syndicates operating along the Guadalquivir, highlighting the comprehensive, cooperative efforts of the Guardia Civil across Andalucía.

This region remains a notorious entry point for narcotics into Europe, demanding continuous and concerted action against drug trafficking and money laundering networks.

Underpinning this victory is the strong collaboration between various branches of Spain's law enforcement in their fourth Special Security Plan for the Campo de Gibraltar.

The involvement of numerous units, including the Regional Centre for Analysis and Intelligence against Drug Trafficking (CRAIN), Sevilla's Judicial Police, the Central Operational Unit (UCO), as well as rapid response and coordination teams across Andalusia, highlights a sophisticated, multi-agency approach.

While this operation remains active and further arrests are anticipated, the success so far significantly disrupts organized crime activities in the region.

As Spain continues its commitment to thwarting illicit drug operations, the implications of such high-profile seizures resonate beyond its borders, contributing to a broader European agenda in curbing the drug trade's extensive reach.
