Cepyme President Acknowledges Pressures Ahead of Re-election

Gerardo Cuerva discloses pressure from CEOE and government not to seek re-election in upcoming business organization elections.
Gerardo Cuerva, the president of Cepyme, revealed on May 5, 2025, during an event in Madrid, that he has faced 'multiple pressures' from various entities, including Antonio Garamendi, the president of CEOE, and the government, to refrain from pursuing re-election in the forthcoming elections set for May 20. Cuerva stated, 'The first pressures came from the president of CEOE,' underscoring the direct influence he perceives from the business federation's leadership.

Cuerva also spoke about the broader landscape facing Spanish businesses, describing the current government as the 'most hostile in decades,' accusing it of attempts to politicize business organizations, particularly following the inclusion of the Catalan small business association, Pimec, in key consultative bodies after agreements with Junts.

In addressing his leadership tenure, which spans four years, Cuerva asserted that he has maintained a clear stance on issues such as political neutrality amid ongoing pressures and criticisms of his approach to company governance.

He defended his position by stating that he has not engaged in coercive tactics to influence other organizations to publicly declare their support.

Cuerva further expressed concerns about the direction of economic policy in Spain, highlighting what he perceives as an encroachment on the independence of business entities.

Cuerva has also shifted his stance regarding the labor reform he previously endorsed in 2021, indicating that, in hindsight, he would 'probably' not sign the same agreement today.

He cited that the reform did not adequately address the needs of the business community.

His earlier agreement, forged in a spirit of unity among various social partners, has since been overshadowed by a subsequent reform initiated by the second deputy prime minister, which Cuerva believes diverges from the interests of the broader business community.

He criticized existing practices that favor regional collective agreements over national ones, calling it a critical issue in business operations.

In light of these challenges, Cuerva has called for greater proactivity from business organizations in negotiating labor reforms and responding to changes proposed by government and union entities.

He emphasized the need for organizations to operate independently rather than merely working from the foundation established by unions and government measures.

Addressing more immediate concerns, Cuerva expressed his dissatisfaction with the government's rhetoric surrounding the recent electrical blackout that occurred on April 28, emphasizing the importance of a detailed investigation before passing judgment on Spain's energy companies.
