Miguel Ángel Revilla Expresses Distress Over Juan Carlos I's Legal Action

Miguel Ángel Revilla Expresses Distress Over Juan Carlos I's Legal Action

The former Cantabrian president calls for the former king to attend a reconciliation meeting amid public criticism of his actions.
Miguel Ángel Revilla, the former president of the Cantabria region, was visibly emotional during an appearance on the program ‘Y Ahora Sonsoles’ as he addressed the legal action taken against him by Juan Carlos I, the former King of Spain.

Revilla urged the former monarch to attend a reconciliation meeting, stating, “I would like him to come.

It would be a gesture on his part, as he has allowed the lawsuit against an ordinary citizen.” He expressed his desire for the king to explain the reasons behind the lawsuit and indicated that he would apologize if convinced he had done wrong.

Revilla lamented that Juan Carlos I had tarnished his reputation, indicating, “He has lost what made me proud of him.” He contrasted his own tax contributions, declaring, “I pay taxes in my country.

That is being patriotic.

He no longer pays them.” The former regional leader expressed the personal impact of the situation, noting that his family had received numerous phone calls regarding the matter, saying, “They should ask me, I am the one who faces this.”

Reflecting on the moment he learned about the lawsuit, Revilla recounted a time in Vitoria where he was set to make a cameo in a film.

His wife informed him of the legal suit, leading him to inform another actor, Resines, that he was in no mood to participate in the film.

He expressed disbelief, stating, “How is it possible that Revilla is being sued by a plebeian?”

Revilla highlighted the unprecedented nature of a monarch suing a citizen, stating, “In the history of European monarchies, there is no precedent of a king suing an ordinary citizen.

It is a tremendous disadvantage.” He criticized the former monarch for his status as a 'fiscal stateless person' in the country he once represented, lamenting the absence of tax payments.

“I do not know any head of state who has removed themselves from the tax authority of their own country,” he remarked.

He underscored his commitment to civic duties, sharing, “I pay my taxes here so we can have healthcare and education.” Revilla pointed to past controversies, such as Spain’s involvement in the Iraq War and the Gürtel corruption case, asserting that he cannot remain silent in the face of corruption, especially from those in power whom he believes should set an example.

Despite the distress caused by the situation, Revilla indicated he would continue to speak out and expressed disappointment in Juan Carlos I. He reflected on his admiration for the former king, recalling a moment during the 1981 coup attempt when he felt inspired by the king's actions to restore democratic order.

“I was enthusiastic about this man on that day.

I admired him,” he stated, adding that he had dedicated a chapter to him in a book he authored.

In a poignant expression of his feelings, Revilla revealed, “I could not have imagined this happening at my age.

In 83 years, no one has condemned me for anything.

We must demand exemplary conduct from all, especially from those who represent us, because if not, it is tremendously demoralizing for citizens.”
