Spain Grapples with Freezing Temperatures amid Weather Alerts

Widespread cold spells prompt yellow warnings across several regions while instability looms in Mediterranean areas.
On January 16th, Spain continues to shiver under cold weather conditions, with temperatures plunging throughout several autonomous communities.

Meteorological authorities have placed regions such as Andalusia, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Galicia, and the Community of Madrid under a Yellow Weather Alert due to the persisting low temperatures.

This cold stretch is notably enduring in Catalonia, Aragón, and the Valencian Community.

While fairly stable weather conditions are expected to dominate most of Spain with clear skies and no precipitations, a departure from this pattern is imminent.

The advent of a weather system known as a DANA (isolated depression at high levels) from the northeast is set to increase instability over the Mediterranean.

This will result in cloudier skies with potential thunderstorms, particularly affecting the eastern façade of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, with unsettled weather possibly stretching to areas around Alborán. Strong, localized downpours are anticipated in the southern areas of Valencia and northern Alicante during the latter half of the day, which may lead to significant rainfall accumulation.

Snowfall is also on the horizon, albeit weak, expected in the mountainous regions of the eastern Peninsula and Mallorca.

The snowline is predicted to range between 900 to 1,200 meters, but it could descend to as low as 700 to 800 meters accompanied by moderate snowfall in some areas.

In the eastern Cantabrian region, low cloudiness will bring a chance of light rain.

Meanwhile, the Canary Islands might experience a significant surge in calima, especially affecting the eastern islands.

Daytime highs are set to fall notably in the northeastern part of the Peninsula, with remarkable decreases anticipated in mountainous areas—besides slight temperature increases in some low-lying areas of Catalonia.

The rest of the regions will experience minimal variations, with some warming in the Atlantic valleys.

Overnight lows are expected to rise marginally, except in the mountain regions of the northern half, the Strait of Gibraltar, the western parts of Andalusia, and the Canary Islands where further cooling is forecast.

Moreover, frosty conditions will prevail across much of the interior and Mallorca, with intense freezes in the northeastern third, both plateaus, and nearby mountain ranges, including specific points in Andalusia and eastern and interior areas of Mallorca.

Wind patterns predominantly from the east and northeast are expected to intensify throughout the day across the Peninsula and Balearic Islands.

Initially, westerly winds will prevail in the Strait of Gibraltar and Alborán before shifting to levante.

Strong northeasterly winds are likely to bring about very strong gusts over the Balearic Islands and along the northern Mediterranean coasts.

In regions like Andalusia, clear skies will give way to overcast conditions in the eastern third and along the Mediterranean coast as the day progresses, with light rain possible in the mountains by nightfall.

Asturias will experience a clear sky with increasing low cloudiness and potential drizzle in Picos de Europa.

In Aragón, initially clear skies will turn cloudy, leading to precipitations in the Pyrenees and southeastern Teruel in the afternoon.

The Canary Islands will progress from partly cloudy to mostly clear, with the calima decreasing westward but remaining significant where present.

Across Cantabria, skies will open up, though low clouds and light rain may develop late in the day.

Castilla-La Mancha is expected to see some cloudiness in the second half of the day with potential light rain in the northeastern and eastern parts.

Castilla y León forecasts cloudy intervals in the northeast and east, and general clear skies elsewhere.

Cataluña will start with clear skies, bringing clouds and potential rain by afternoon and evening, with possibilities of brief thunderstorms or small hail in Ampurdán and southern Tarragona.

Communities like Ceuta will remain mostly cloudless with moderate westerly winds, while the Valencian Community will experience increasing clouds with widespread afternoon showers, causing abrupt weather changes.

Extremadura maintains clear skies with potential frosts, while Galicia anticipates mild cloud cover with possible fog or mist along with rising temperatures on the northern coast.

Lastly, the Balearic Islands expect increasing cloud cover with a chance for sporadic showers and thunderstorms by the afternoon, while La Rioja will face cloudy intervals with little change in temperatures.

With weather alerts still active and challenging conditions predicted across various regions, residents and local authorities remain on high alert.

Adjustments to travel plans and outdoor activities may be necessary as many regions experience this brisk winter phase.
