Spanish Judge Orders Trial for Brother of Prime Minister Sánchez and Other Political Figures

Spanish Judge Orders Trial for Brother of Prime Minister Sánchez and Other Political Figures

David Sánchez, along with ten others including the leader of the PSOE in Extremadura, faces charges of administrative misconduct and influence peddling.
A judge in Badajoz has confirmed the indictment of David Sánchez, the brother of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, along with Miguel Ángel Gallardo, the leader of the Socialist Party (PSOE) in Extremadura, and eight other individuals, on charges of alleged administrative prevarication and influence peddling.

The decision follows the denial of appeals by David Sánchez and the Public Prosecutor's Office against his indictment and the opening of an oral trial.

Judge Beatriz Biedma, from the Investigating Court No. 3 in Badajoz, has indicated that the position of Coordinator of Conservatory Activities, which David Sánchez held, was specifically created to be assigned to him, a fact that was reportedly known within the Conservatories and the Culture Department prior to his formal candidacy.

The judge noted that the creation of this position was unnecessary and did not align with the stated reasons for its establishment as detailed in the official creation documents.

The judge highlighted that the role was modified to suit the personal preferences and professional ambitions of David Sánchez.

While he initially performed the duties outlined in his contract, the judge stated that this did not justify the creation of the position, as its origin did not match the description provided in official documents and contradicting testimonies.

In addition, evidence suggests that the position of Head of the Section of Cross-border Programs and Activities was designed for Luis María Carrero Pérez, who was alleged to have been assisting David Sánchez in his work prior to the formal establishment of this role.

In response to the developments, socialist sources have claimed that the case is merely a campaign by the far-right against the president's political environment, emphasizing that the prosecutor's report against the indictment was 'devastating' and claiming that 'there is no case' against David Sánchez.

They suggest that ongoing appeals may prevent the trial from proceeding.

Conversely, Cuca Gamarra, the Secretary General of the People's Party (PP), has publicly criticized the situation, asserting that the Prime Minister should not delay calling for elections in light of the allegations faced by his brother and others in his inner circle.

Gamarra called for public accountability regarding what she termed the 'moral degradation' of the government.

The PP has urged voters to express their perspectives on the government’s alleged issues with corruption, while Vox, another political party, has labeled the current administration as 'the most corrupt in history,' calling for the PP to sever ties with the PSOE.

They contend that any negotiation effort serves only to prolong the government's tenure.

The case and its implications unfold in a complex political arena, highlighting significant tensions among Spain's leading political parties as they navigate serious allegations of corruption.
