Two Men Remanded in Custody for Domestic Violence Murders in Spain

Two Men Remanded in Custody for Domestic Violence Murders in Spain

The recent deaths of two women increase the toll of gender-based violence in Spain to six in 2025.
On March 21, 2025, courts in Burgos and Palma de Mallorca granted provisional detention without bail for two men accused of murdering their partners in separate incidents classified as gender-based violence.

These cases contributed to a growing concern over domestic violence in Spain, where the total number of gender-related murder victims in 2025 has reached six, and 1,300 since the start of official records in 2003.

In Burgos, a 43-year-old military man has been detained after confessing to the murder of his wife, Andrea Bejarano.

He was arrested on Tuesday after reporting her missing, only to later admit that he had killed her and disposed of her body in a remote location in Salinillas de Bureba, approximately 50 kilometers from Burgos.

The area had sentimental significance for the couple, according to investigators.

Following extensive questioning by authorities, the suspect was presented to the court by early afternoon on Friday.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Andrea was killed at their home on Sunday evening, the same day her family last heard from her.

Her body was found partially buried and camouflaged with branches, which would have complicated its discovery if not for the suspect's confession.

The forensic report is expected to provide details on the circumstances of her death, but police hypothesize that asphyxiation was the cause.

The Superior Court of Justice of Castilla y León has stated that the accused is being investigated for homicide and that there were no previous records of gender-based violence against him.

The court also suspended his parental rights regarding the couple's child, who is currently in the care of the paternal family and receiving support from local social services in coordination with his school.

In Mallorca, a man aged 82 has been remanded in custody after allegedly shooting his 79-year-old wife, Juana B.J., in their home in Puigpunyent.

Following the shooting, the man reportedly attempted to take his own life but survived.

He was briefly hospitalized before being transferred to detention by the Civil Guard.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with the Superior Court of Justice of the Balearic Islands indicating that the possibility of a murder-suicide pact has been ruled out, affirming that this case, too, is being treated as a gender-based murder.

The case will be handled by a specialized court focusing on violence against women.

Victims of gender-based violence in Spain can access support through the national helpline at 016, which operates 24/7 in 53 languages, as well as via WhatsApp at 600 000 016 and email at 016-online@igualdad.gob.es.

In emergency situations, individuals can contact emergency services at 112, along with the National Police and Civil Guard at 091 and 062, respectively.

For minors seeking assistance, the ANAR Foundation can be reached at 900 202 010.
