Universitat de València Confirms Class Suspension Due to Severe Weather Warnings

The rector, Mavi Mestre, acted on recommendations from the institution's emergency committee ahead of impending floods.
The Universitat de València (UV) has communicated to the investigating judge that the decision to suspend classes on October 28 was made at the recommendation of its emergency committee.

This decision was made in response to alerts from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) and the Emergency Services of the Generalitat Valenciana regarding severe weather conditions expected to lead to flooding in the province.

In a formal document submitted to the Court of Instruction Number 3 in Catarroja, the UV outlined its decision-making process concerning the suspension of educational activities.

The rector, Mavi Mestre, emphasized that the university acted based on the same information available to any institution monitoring public advisories.

The document specifies that the rector undertook the suspension of classes after analyzing the forecasts provided by Aemet and the regional emergency services.

The emergency committee assessed weather forecasts on October 27, which indicated the potential for significant rainfall on October 29 and 30. Following an assessment by the emergency committee on October 28, recommendations were made to declare a Level 1 emergency to prevent travel and transport use due to the anticipated severe weather.

By midday, the committee noted a special warning issued by Emergencies 112CV regarding intense rainfall and advised the community to take precautions, including relocating vehicles from flood-prone areas.

The committee evaluated the situation and proposed a Level 2 emergency for the university, which included the suspension of classes.

The decision issued by the rector followed this evaluation.

Later that day, the municipality of Sagunto announced a suspension of classes in the city, coinciding with new alerts from Aemet regarding orange warnings for much of the Valencia province.

As the situation developed, the emergency committee proposed establishing the Level 2 emergency at approximately 7:49 PM, which was subsequently declared by the rector.

The following day, on October 29 at 11:29 AM, the emergency committee escalated the emergency status to Level 3. This decision led to the suspension of all in-person university activities, except for essential maintenance and support roles needed to manage critical facilities.

The announcement was disseminated to the university community and released to the media and social networks, indicating the seriousness of the weather threat and the university's proactive measures in response.
